I lived in Izmir, Turkey from October 1953-1955 because my Father was in the US Navy so our Family flew to Izmir to live. The weather is very similar to San Diego where we lived at the time. We returned to the USA via US Navy ship in 1955. While living in Izmir at that time we visited Ephesus, and lived near the Mosque in the Alsancak area. I loved Izmir. I am now 76. We saw Pompeii on the way back to the USA. I was 9 years old by the time we returned to the USA. I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you.

We're very glad to hear that your friend is visiting Izmir and we're wishing them a great trip in advance :) In addition to the recommendations in the video, there are some places that are more well known to the locals. Izmir is a unique place where you can find different types of churches mosques and synagogues within meters of each other, so I'd recommend seeing some of them to get that multiethnic historical feeling. Some nice ones include St Polycarp church, Hisar mosque, and Beth Israel synagogue. For Alsancak area, there are some lively streets with cafes and everything that are worth visiting. First one starts from Reyhan Patisserie on Dr. Mustafa Enver Bey street and continues toward the sea. Another one is Alsancak Sevgi Yolu which is closed to traffic and is like a Turkish version of the Walk of Fame with Turkish artists' names written on stars. There are also handcraft vendors throughout Sevgi Yolu, so it is worth a visit. Definitely they should walk through the promenade which is called Kordon and watch the beautiful sunset. In the evening, friend groups fill the entire waterfront and sing songs so it is a very nice place to do some people watching. Grab a couple of beers, buy some rice filled mussels from a mussel stand and enjoy Kordon during sunset! Another thriving boulevard in this part of the city is Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi. For dinner, I would recommend eating some quality seafood in one of the restaurants on Yzb. Şerafettin Bey street which is an extension from Kıbrıs Şehitleri boulevard. Don't forget to order different kinds of mezes next to the seafood and the traditional Turkish alcoholic beverage rakı. You fill half the glass with rakı and the other half with water because it's pretty strong. There is also another glass that waiters bring for pure water. You take a sip of water after you take a sip of rakı each time. They can find some nice bars and clubs in Muzaffer İzgü street which is another extension from the same boulevard. This street has colorful ancient Greek houses so even if they are not planning to explore bars, they should definitely pay a visit. At the end of the night, it is traditional to get a "bomba" which is a unique dessert to Izmir from Çelebi Patisserie. Atatürk Museum is a nice museum in the area. Alsancak Gündoğdu Square and Cumhuriyet Square are the two most important squares in the city with cool sculptures. Kültürpark is like the Central Park of Izmir and it hosts international fairs every year so exploring it and maybe spending some time in the amusement park inside would be a cool option. For Konak area, in addition to the video, there is a very historical caravanserai inside Kemeraltı Bazaar which is called Kızlarağası Hanı. They should definitely go inside, see the vendors, drink a cup of Turkish coffee and soak up all of that Ottoman era vibes. Hisar mosque can be seen from the second floor of the caravanserai as well. In Kemeraltı Bazaar, they should definitely find a pickle juice seller and try it, it's a local favorite! Two of the best museums in Izmir are the Archaeology and Ethnography Museums in Konak that are right next to each other and have various findings from the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine eras. They can combine their trip in Konak with Dario Moreno Street and the historical lift right behind it which is called Tarihi Asansör. They can take the tram to get there from Konak, it's pretty easy. This was the Jewish part of the town and Dario Moreno was a Jewish Turkish singer who lived around there. They should take the elevator up and look at the gorgeous view of Izmir. A dinner option would be in Konak Pier which is thought to have been designed by the designer of Eiffel Tower. My favorite restaurant there is North Pier's but they should call and RSVP beforehand and say that they want a table by the seaside. The city lights from the Pier at night look amazing! A trip to Izmir is never complete without taking the ferry and going to the other side of the bay. An important breakfast component to try in Izmir is the unique boyoz. It goes well with boiled eggs. Also, before taking the ferry, they can buy a gevrek (which is like a thin bagel with sesame on top) from a gevrek stand in front of the pier and throw pieces of it to the seagulls that accompany them during the ride. Usually the second floor of the ferries are open air and add more to the experience. They can take the ferry to Karşıyaka and walk the Karşıyaka Bazaar right in front of the pier. They'll see women sculptures in the entrance which are dedicated to the Amazon women who are believed to have founded the city. Close by, there is a huge monument which is Atatürk, His Mother and Women's Rights Monument. This part of the city has its own team whose colors are red and green so they'll see its flags and colors everywhere. They should take the tram and go to Yunuslar station. There is the best restaurant that makes the most famous food in Izmir: kumru. They should order a kumru which is a special kind of sandwich in the restaurant called Kumrucu Şevki. My first favorite street in this part of the city is Cemal Gürsel Caddesi that bends inwards from the waterfront next to the Adnan Saygun Park. There are nice cafes and restaurants on one side of the street and on the other side, the park includes an open air amphitheater and a small open air archaeological museum. The second street is Şht. Cengiz Topel street that starts from the corner of Bravo Patisserie and after they cross the bridge, continues onward. Bravo Patisserie is one of the best places to get ice cream! An original flavor is Girit Güzeli which literally translates to beauty from Crete. The waterfront of Bostanlı in this area is also filled with people, but here there are different courts and playgrounds that people enjoy. Also a very nice place to watch the sunset, especially on the Bostanlı Günbatımı Seyir Terası, the bridge designed for people to watch the sunset on it together. There are other amazing places to visit that are not in the city center but are worth visiting. One day trip would be to the Izmir Wildlife Park, the second largest zoo in Turkey, and the close by Birds Paradise where you can spot some flamingos and other exotic birds in their natural habitat. This trip would be even more amazing if they can rent a bike and take the bike lane all the way to these places starting from Bostanlı. Ephesus should be joined with a trip to Şirince, an ancient and authentic village that is known for its wine. Çeşme and Alaçatı would be another day trip as they have the best beaches, beach clubs and night life (if they are visiting during summer) and the most instagrammable houses with colorful flowers. Other day trips can be to the beautiful coastal towns of Foça, Sığacık and Dikili each with their own history. 1st time watching one of your vids and I liked/sub'd before the intro finished. You guys are living! Showing me places I missed too! (I lived in Karsiyaka & Hatay for 4yrs.. great people/food/city).

We’d say you should try to go as early or late as possible. We stayed until sunset and most people had left at that point! If you stay in pamukkale town itself you can just walk up. If you come from another city it’s probably best to come by car.

Hi! Thanks for the comment. We got a guide at the entrance of Ephesus and he was really good! There are many guides there and they speak good English. For the town, we just wandered around on our own and we met a local woman who kinda showed us around but she wasn’t a guide… so unfortunately we can’t help with that! But it’s easy enough to wander around on your own. Or you could always ask in your accommodation if they know

The day tours are useful if you don’t want to do a lot of planning / coordination yourself. They often also help in offering more interesting history along the way compared to just reading the signs at the locations themselves. We rented a car to visit most of them ourselves, but we had the car for a full month when we were visiting Turkey, so we’re going at a pretty slow and relaxed pace ourselves

For Pamukkale and Ephesus, we definitely recommend a guide. There’s so much history at both of those places. You can either hire a local guide at the entrance or book a guided tour online before going. St. Mary is a very small stop, so a guide is not necessary at that one. And for clothes, it depends what areas of Turkey you’re going to. The coastal regions should be pretty warm overall, but if you go inland and more north, it can get colder in the evenings. So we would recommend at least a light jacket or sweater for those occasions. A rain jacket might also be smart just in case. Have a great trip to Turkey!

I lived in Izmir for 4 years as a U.S. Soldier working for NATO. The video has a heavy Islamic flavor which can be off-putting to many Americans but Izmir is the California of Turkey. Located on the west coast, you can get a beer just about anywhere. To be sure, most Turks are Muslim but there is a big Christian church in Izmir and the locals do not look down on you if you are not Muslim. Also, koo-SHOD'-uh-see (Kushadesi) and CHESH'-may (Cesme) are the correct pronunciations. "c" / "s" with a hook at the bottom = ch / sh; and a regular "c" is pronounced "j": Incirlik is IN'-jur-lik.

We would recommend Antalya if we had to choose! There are even more ancient sites close to the city as well as beautiful mountain scenery and amazing beaches. But we also visited Izmir when it was not great weather, so that might influence our opinion a bit (since Antalya was sunny every day).

Turkey is in the hands of the ancient peoples of the region.
90% of the people living in Turkey are not Turks, they are ancient inhabitants of the area Greeks Byzantine Jews Arabs Kurds Armenians etc., who became Turks.
