See See Rider
Big Bill Broonzy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You see, see rider, see what you done, done
See, see rider, you see what you done, done
You see, see rider, you see what you done, done
You don't made me love you and now your man don't come

My home is on the water, I don't like no land at all
Home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
I'd rather be dead than to stay here and be your dog

So you see, see rider, see what you done, done
See, see rider, you see what you done, done
You see, see rider, you see what you done, done
You've made me love you and now your man don't come

I'm goin' away babe, sure don't wanna go
Goin' away babe, but I sure don't wanna go
I'm goin' away babe, but I sure don't wanna go
When I'm leave you this time you'll never see me no more

So you see, see rider, see what you done, done
See, see rider, you see what you done, done
You see, see rider, you see what you done, done
You've made me love you and now your man don't come

My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
Home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
So goodbye baby, I'm tired of being your dog

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Big Bill Broonzy's song "See See Rider" tell the story of a man who has been hurt by a woman who he loved. He addresses the woman, calling her "see see rider" and tells her to see what she has done to him. He says that she has made him love her, but now her man won't come to her. The man then goes on to express his desire to leave the woman, as his home is on the water and he doesn't like any land at all. He tells her he would rather be dead than be her dog, indicating a sense of feeling trapped and subservient in the relationship. He reiterates that he is leaving and that he won't come back.

Overall, the lyrics of "See See Rider" capture a very emotional and personal experience of love and heartbreak. The use of repetition in the chorus emphasizes the singer's feelings of betrayal and hurt. The imagery of the man's home being on the water also adds to this sense of being trapped and unhappy in this relationship.

"Por encima o por debajo Big Bill Broonzy empezó a salmodiar see, see, rider, como siempre todo convergía desde dimensiones inconciliables, un grotesco collage que había que ajustar con vodka y categorías kantianas, esos tranquilizantes contra cualquier coagulación demasiado brusca de la realidad" -Rayuela, Cortázar

I know of three recorded versions of this by Big Bill. This is the best I've heard as he puts in a few more variations. I knew of this version but hadn't heard it for years, thanks for posting! The transcription in Grossmann's book is good but is incomplete. The title is 'Shuffle Rag' and it's a hard job to play it as lively as Broonzy!

I've never heard of Big Bill 'till recently. Truly one of the great masters of the artform. I would offer that most of the ultra rich and famous rock and roll artists owe a debt to the real inventors of this artform . . . Big Bill being among them.

I found myself coming along with lyrics about halfway through. I love this man. The one Big Bill song I ever learned was Long Tall Mama and what a jam these songs are.

You can tell from the music that Big Bill knew some good times in his life, despite any other woes he might have had. Great music, superb musicality, makes me think of summer fairs and dancing with a glass of cider, thanks for uploading.

Superb! You can see why he influenced the KinKs and the Stones so much, as both bands gave him great tributes and deservedly so. Great blues licks!

Wow this is great stuff. Listen how the Bass lines and the lead lines are complete. Nobody could play it quite like Big Bill. Amazing playing

Big Bill was awesome! One of my guitar heroes.

Big Bill is possibly the best guitarist ever... He's almost too good to comprehend. I haven't heard anyone recreate his style - not even close. Thanks for posting this - it's great to hear!
