Caravan
Big Bop Nouveau Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night and stars above that shine so bright
The myst'ry of their fading light
That shines upon our caravan

Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
Across the sand so I may keep
The mem'ry of our caravan
This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Resting in my arms
As I thrill to the magic charms
Of you beside me here beneath the blue

My dream of love is coming true
Within our desert caravan

There is no trumpet player today, or probably ever, that could stand up in front of an outstanding band and lead the band while playing solos and lead parts in all songs the entire night. Maynard had the talent, personality and overwhelming experience which allowed him to do just that. In today's world you simply cannot get the experience to do it. Also, there will never be another trumpet player with the talent of Maynard. It simply won't ever happen again. So, enjoy these videos of Maynard and his band because you will never see it again.

@1985Saleen121

Arturo Sandoval is another good one

I traveled from Toronto Canada in 1990 to see Maynard at the marquee theatre in Buffalo and somehow got back stage to see my hero I have the photo autograph on an American one dollar bill I'm now 60 and have followed Maynard since the age of 12 and totally loyal to this day. I'm sooooo proud that Maynard was born and raised in Canada!!! Yes, the world's greatest trumpet player

@adityatyagi4009

I love how Maynard shakes the hand of the soloist after he takes a solo. Such a kind, classy, and gracious man!

@eric_in_florida

Contrast that with Buddy Rich who used to berate his guys if they screwed up. Always hated to hear that cuz loved his bands.

@joksal9108

@@eric_in_floridaWhich is why Maynard’s band was so much more fun than Buddy’s. Buddy’s band was a perfect machine. Maynard’s band was not as tight, but he had better soloists and a real rapport with audiences. I bet even the ultimate Buddy fan couldn’t name ten important soloists out of his bands. Steve Marcus, Bobby Shew, Jimmy Bruno, and you’re done.

Maynard was an absolute legend to us high school jazz players in the 70's and 80's. Saw him 3 times. RIP My man.
