The Seer
Big Country Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long ago I heard a tale I never will forget
The time was in the telling on the bank the scene was set
The sky was rolling blindly on, the daylight had not gone
She washed her hair among the stones and saw what was to come
All this will pass
There will be blood among the corn and heroes in the hills
But there is more to come my boy before you've had your fill
Men will come and rape the soil as though it were their own
And they will bathe their feet in oil as I have bathed my own

All this will pass
All things must come
Just as I tell you here

Stones will stand together as if searching for the stars
And all come crashing down again before they reach too far
She turned to face the setting sun, I turned to walk away
But then she called my name again and beckoned me to stay

All this will pass
All things must come
Just as I tell you here

She told me of the famous sons who write their names in peace
Yet be cut down before the time has come for our release
Just as I tell you here
Even now I wait for the coming day
Even now she waits in the dawn
For the tales she tells, for the gifts that she will sell
For the sight she knows, for a vision that still grows
With the dream in her eyes no one's seen

I listened for so long that day that I can hardly tell
If what she said was heaven sent or brought to bear in hell
That men of hope would stand alone and still be cast a lie
Just as Romans cast them on the day they were to die

All this will pass
All things must come
Just as I tell you here

Even now I wait for the coming day
Even now she waits in the dawn
For the tales she tells, for the gifts that she will sell

For the sight she knows, for a vision that still grows
With the dream in her eyes no one's seen

Overall Meaning

The Seer by Big Country is a mysterious and foreboding song about an encounter with a prophetic woman who predicts a future of violence, destruction, and chaos. The singer recalls the encounter with the seer, who predicts events that would come to pass but maintains a sense of ambiguity on whether the forecast came from a heavenly source or originated from darker forces. The seer describes cutting down of famous sons who would be unable to realize their potential, and she predicts men raping the soil and bathing their feet in oil, suggesting a period of environmental degradation and resource exploitation. She speaks of stones standing together as if searching for the stars and then coming crashing down again before they accomplish their mission. In the end, the seer waits for the coming day for the tales she tells and the gifts she will sell, with a dream in her eyes, no one has seen.

The song is a depiction of a desolate and dangerous future that looms ahead but is balanced with mystical and mythical elements of the seer's descriptions. The seer's vision is dark and uncompromising, and her warnings take on an urgent and ominous tone. The music is laden with a foreboding synth lead, a driving guitar line, and a propulsive rhythm section, that sets the stage for the impending doom that the seer's foresees. The Seer is a song that is open to multiple interpretations that range from environmental degradation, war, and conflict, to a much more personal and inner turmoil related to the loss of hope and the fear of the unknown.

As recording progressed at The Power Plant, a highlight for both the band and producer was the arrival of Kate Bush, who had first worked at The Power Plant on The Kick Inside. “It was Stuart’s decision to bring in Kate,” says producer Robin Millar. “I remember him saying Annie Lennox would be good but he just couldn’t deal with her temperament.” Having dispatched a cassette of the title track to Bush, Millar and the band were floored when she turned up, her parts fully worked out.

“She was unbelievably well prepared, she had really done her homework,” says Millar. “She had got the track with the rough lead vocal and we had basically said ‘just do something’, and she absolutely made it her own. She came up with these amazing harmonies, these great backing parts, these great yodelling parts – ‘Yo-yo-ya-yo-oooo!’ It was all completely her.

“The way The Power Plant was arranged, the control room was above the studio, so you looked down, and she was just there, standing at a microphone, in the middle of this big space. Her performance was spine-tinglingly good. Everyone in the control room was whooping, thumbs up, and clapping.”

Working with her was not without its challenges, he adds. “She disliked being produced; she disliked someone being there saying, ‘That worked better last time than this time.’ I do remember she was touchy, but incredibly professional, and very exciting. We were all very friendly at the end, everyone liked what she had done; it was a very enjoyable day.”
