Woodstock
Big Country Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
When I asked him, "where are you going?"
This he told me

I'm going down to Yasgur's farm
Gonna join a rock and roll band
I'm going to camp out on the land
And try and get my soul free

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
I feel just like a cog
In something turning

Well maybe it's the time of year
Or maybe it's the time of man
I don't know who I am
But life is for learning

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden

By the time I got to Woodstock
They were half a million strong
Everywhere there was song and celebration

I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies above our nation

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden

We are stardust

We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Big Country’s song Woodstock describe a young man who is walking down the road, and when the singer asks where he’s going, he answers that he is heading to join a rock and roll band at Yasgur’s farm. The young man is planning to camp out on the land and try to free his soul. The singer continues, saying he came to Woodstock to get away from the smog and to learn more about himself, but he’s not quite sure who he is yet. The chorus of the song reiterates that people are made of stardust and are golden, and they need to return to the garden.

The song Woodstock reflects the ethos of the 1960s counterculture, the summer of 1969, and Woodstock festival itself. The lyrics contain a lot of symbolism, for instance, the child of God that the singer meets on the road represents the hippie generation, and the dream of bombers turning into butterflies is a metaphor for the Vietnam War coming to an end. The song's message of “getting back to the garden” is reminiscent of the hippie’s message of returning to nature, a simpler, purer life free of consumerism and politics.

A good song from the 1970s, but a great, wonderful cover version of Big Country in 2001
So sad: The guitarist Stuart Adamson died in 2001 in a hotel by suicide ..... RIP Stuart!
