Born To Run
Big Daddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway nine,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line
H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Yes, girl we were

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
H-Oh, Will you walk with me out on the wire
`Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Babe I want to know if love is real

Oh, can you show me

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
Girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the street tonight
In an everlasting kiss

One, two, three, four

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we can live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
H-Oh, Someday girl I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really wanna go
And we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Oh honey, tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Come on with me, tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of the song "Born To Run" by Bruce Springsteen are a vivid description of the American dream, highlighting the contrast between the hardship of everyday life, and the hope of escaping it. The day and night are two different worlds, as people toil under the sun, and roam through lavish mansions in their cars at night. The metaphor of "suicide machines" is used to describe the cars these people use, which are powerful and fast but also dangerous. Springsteen draws on his own experiences of growing up in a working-class family in New Jersey, where he witnessed firsthand the struggles of working people. The chorus of the song captures the spirit of the youth that wants to break free, and run as fast and as far away as possible from this suffocating town.

The second verse of the song moves from the collective protest to a more personal narrative. Wendy, a young woman, is asked to take a chance with the singer to break away from everything she has ever known. The sense of urgency is palpable, as the singer calls her to join for a ride to the end of the world, where they will never look back. The freedom offered is seen as an escape from a trap that has been laid for them. The sense of danger is matched by the singer's desire to live life at its fullest, even if it's only for one night, and asks Wendy to do the same. The bridge before the final chorus is a plea for clarity, where the singer asks Wendy to show him what love is.

Big Daddy helps Rick Nelson show Springsteen who's The Boss ( not Tony Danza ! ) Awesome version !

Love this version -- it tears the overproduced bombast of the original to shreds. In my Springsteen covers playlist with other versions by Roger Daltrey and Allan Clarke. These guys also do a hilarious "Dancing in the Dark".
