Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Big Daddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I come home, in the mornin' light
My mother says "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh momma dear, we're not the fortunate ones
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have fun...

The phone rings, in the middle of the night
My father yells "What you gonna do with your life?"
Oh daddy dear, you know you're still number one
But girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have

That's all they really want...
Some fun...
When the workin' day is done
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Ho hoo girls just wanna have (girls)fun (they want)
(Wanna have fun)
(Girls)
(Wanna have)

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest o' the world
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Ho hoo girls just wanna have

That's all they really want...
Is some fun...
When the workin' day is done
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have (girls) fun (they want)
(Wanna have fun)
(Girls)
(Wanna have)

They just want, they just wanna (girls)
They just want, they just wanna (girls just wanna have fun)
Oh girls

Girls just wanna have fun
(Just want, they just wanna)
They just want, they just wanna (girls)
They just want, they just wanna (girls just wanna have fun)
Girls, girls just wanna have fun

When the workin'
When the workin' day is done
Oh, when the workin' day is done
Oh, girls
Girls just wanna have fun

They just want, they just wanna (girls)
They just want, they just wanna (girls just wanna have fun)
Oh, girls

Girls just wanna have fuun
(They just wanna, they just wanna)
When the workin'
When the working day is done (they just want, they just wanna)
Oh, when the working day is done (oh, girls)
(Girls just wanna have fun)
Oh, girls

Girls just wanna have fun
(They just want, they just wanna)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Big Daddy's song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" express the desire of young women to enjoy life and have some fun instead of conforming to societal expectations of being productive members of society. The singer in this song seems to be a young woman who faces criticism and disapproval from her parents because she's not living up to their expectations for her. The singer's mother wants her to "live her life right," while her father chastises her for not having a clear plan for her future. However, the singer doesn't care about their opinions because all she wants is to have some fun with her girlfriends. She acknowledges that they're not "fortunate ones," but that doesn't mean they can't enjoy their lives.

Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes the idea that girls just want to have fun. She repeats it several times in the chorus and even adds some "ho hoos" for emphasis. The singer seems to be saying that girls have very simple desires and that having fun is all they really want. The song also highlights the double standard that exists between boys and girls. The singer mentions how boys often take beautiful girls and hide them away from the rest of the world, but she wants to be the one to walk in the sun.

In conclusion, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Big Daddy celebrates the idea that young women shouldn't be confined to traditional gender roles and societal expectations. The song empowers women to express themselves and have fun.

This is what I remember from the LP liner notes: In the early 60's, Big Daddy went to SE Asia to entertain US troops. In Laos they were captured by the Pathet Lao, but the US did nothing. This "lost band of the jungle" was held until finally rescued in the mid-80's, by CIA agents posing as a film crew shooting a monster movie. The monsters scared the guerrillas into the jungle. Big Daddy was held on Guam for weeks, with nothing to listen to but top-40 radio, so they learned the 80's hot tunes.

Big Daddy are great.

Big Daddy was a 1980's band that did Doo Wop versions of rock classics. the novel story was of them being in a prison camp since the late 50's, released from captivity in the 1980's with only the musical knowledge of the 1950's. Get the humor?

Paul Joseph
