swingin on a star
Big Dee Irwin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you like to swing on a star
(Oh, oh, oh)
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
(Oh, oh, oh)

And be better off than you are
(Oh, oh, oh)
Or would you rather be a mule
(Yeah, yeah, talking 'bout a mule now)

A mule is an animal
With long funny ears
He kicks up at anything he hears
(Just like you, Dee)

His back is brawny
And his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid
With a stubborn streak

And by the way
If you hate to go to school
(Which I do)
You may grow up to be a mule
(I don't wanna grow up
And be a mule)

Well, would you like to
Swing on a star (okay)
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
(One moonbeam, two moonbeam)

And be better off than you are
(Oh, oh, oh)
Or would you rather be a pig
(Yeah, yeah, talking 'bout a pig now)

A pig is an animal
With dirt on his face (yeah)
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
(Look who's talking)

He's got no manners
When he eats his food
(You gobble)
He's fat and lazy and extremely rude

But if you don't care
A feather or a fig
(That's the truth)
You may grow up to be a pig
(Not if I can help it, baby)

Oh, oh, oh (oh, oh, oh)
Oh, oh, oh

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
You could be swinging on a star

Oh, oh, oh, yeah
We could be swinging on a star
Oh, oh, oh, yeah
We could be swinging on a star
Oh, oh, oh, yeah
We could be swinging on a star
Oh, oh, oh, yeah
We could be swinging on a star

Overall Meaning

The song "Swinging on a Star" is a whimsical musical tale that contemplates the question of being content with one's station or dreaming of something better. The opening lines offer the listener a choice - do you want to swing on a star and carry moonbeams home in a jar? The idea of swinging on a star is akin to achieving something extraordinary or unimaginable, and carrying moonbeams in a jar is perhaps a reference to capturing a unique and magical experience. The subsequent lines invite the listener to consider being "better off than you are." In contrast, the song presents a mule and a pig as alternative options for life.

The lyrics for the mule describe it as a stubborn and stupid animal with a weak brain, just like someone who hates going to school may end up leading a life with no aspirations, just like the mule. The lyrics of the pig describe it as an animal with dirt on its face, terrible manners, and is lazy and rude. The song implies that if one could choose, then it would always be better to choose to "swing on a star" rather than leading a life as a mule or a pig.

In conclusion, "Swinging on a Star" is a fun and lighthearted song that encourages the listener to dream big and to seek adventure, while at the same time warning against embracing a life of complacency, which could lead to a life with no aspirations.

I remember hearing this at the age of 4 in 1963. It's been in my head for days so I checked it out. I'd forgotten how good it is.
