Named after lyrics in the Bob Dylan song Wiggle Wiggle, the band has sold more than 100,000 copies of their albums since they released their first album, the self titled Big Fat Snake in 1991. After Peter Viskinde left in 2009, he released the album Reel 1 under the Big Fat Snake name, claiming he owned the rights to it. Later the same year, the band name was given to the original band members in an out-of-court settlement in which Viskinde agreed to use another name (Sheriffen) for his new band.

Ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-wah
Only the lonely
Only the lonely (Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah)
Know the way I feel tonight (Ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah)
Only the lonely (Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah)
There goes my baby
There goes my heart
They're gone forever
So far apart
But only the lonely
Know why
I cry
Only the lonely
Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah
Ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-wah
Only the lonely
Only the lonely
Know the heartaches I've been through
Only the lonely
Know I cried and cried for you
Maybe tomorrow
A new romance
No more sorrow
But that's the chance, you gotta take
If your lonely heart breaks
Only the lonely
Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah
The song "Only the Lonely" by Big Fat Snake explores the feeling of loneliness and heartbreak. The repetition of the line "only the lonely" emphasizes the idea that only those who have experienced heartbreak understand the depth of the pain. The opening lines create a melody that is catchy and instantly recognizable, drawing the listener in. The lyrics then delve into the emotional core of the song, expressing the idea that only the lonely truly know what it feels like to go through heartache.
The lyrics express a sense of loss and isolation, as the singer describes the pain of missing someone who has left his life. He notes that they are "gone forever" and "so far apart," emphasizing the distance between them and the finality of their separation. The line "know why I cry," suggests that the singer is grappling with the reasons behind his heartbreak, while the repeated refrain of "only the lonely" reinforces his sense of solitude. The final verse offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that there may be a chance for new love in the future, but the tone remains somber, highlighting the depth of his pain.
