Big Head Todd and The Monsters – singer-guitarist Todd Park Mohr, bassist-singer Rob Squires, drummer-singer Brian Nevin and keyboardist-guitarist-singer Jeremy Lawton -- could have begun resting on their laurels back in 1993, when their Top 10 singles “Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Circle” and “It’s Alright” pushed the album Sister Sweetly to platinum certification. However, Mohr says, “I’ve fought throughout our career not to be a one-trick pony, to be the kind of band that has depth and diversity in its catalogue. I’m a fan of this band, and I’m constantly looking forward to what comes next.”
The essence of Big Head Todd and The Monsters – a rootsy, emotionally direct variety of rock ’n’ roll that lends itself particularly well to a live setting – has been winning fans since Mohr, Rob Squires and Brian Nevin started playing together in high school (Jeremy Lawton joined in 2004). Needless to say, the three never expected to be in the same band at this late date, but, as Mohr points out, “It was a really fortunate combination of musical personalities, and we’re still partners in every sense of the word.”
The band spent seven years developing their chemistry and amassing a following, boosted significantly by the independent releases Another Mayberry (1989) and Midnight Radio (1990), before being “discovered” by the listening public at large with 1993’s Sister Sweetly. After a major-label stint (Sister Sweetly, 1994’s Stratagem, 1997’s Beautiful World), during which the trio increasingly found itself frustrated artistically, they reclaimed their independent status (2001’s Riviera, 2004’s Crimes of Passion). “If it were not for our ability to do things for ourselves, we would have disappeared a long time ago,” Mohr allows.

Let the sun shine in and shook me off the ground
Fallin' apart somehow you kept it together
Kept me from drifting in the stormy weather
Love like an artist let your juices flow
Like a scientist driven to know everything
Flood of tears will not break the levees
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
If you let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Ain't it funny how the times they change
Started out cool and ended up acting strange
We all want to get love and affection
No one wants to let down their protection
But you and I we've been through that
We accept each other as a matter of cold fact
Now we're gonna spend our whole lives together
Started out right and it's just getting better
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
So just let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
It took the two of us so long to get it right
Ain't gonna let it slip
It took the two of us so long to get it right
Ain't gonna let it slip
Let me in and give me your heart
Forget the past and get me a new start
Be who I am somehow you just let me
Rocksteady ever ready
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
If you let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady (Open me up and turn my life around)
Ever ready
Rocksteady (Let the sunshine in and shook me off the ground)
So heavy
Girl, I love you (Flood of tears will not break the levees)
So just let me
Rocksteady (Rocksteady)
Ever ready (Ever ready)
The song "Rocksteady" by Big Head Todd And The Monsters is an all-time classic about the power of love, exploring the idea that love can be a solid, unshakeable force that gives us strength, stability, and support. The lyrics suggest that the singer was in a state of instability and falling apart, but found someone who turned his life around and gave him a new perspective. They help each other stay grounded and overcome storms, no matter how big or powerful they may be. The phrase "Rocksteady ever ready" is repeated throughout the song, acting as a mantra for the couple to stay committed to each other through thick and thin.
The lyrics also touch upon the idea of the evolution of a relationship, how it can start out "cool" but eventually end up with one or both parties "acting strange". However, despite the difficulties that every relationship faces, the couple featured in the song claims that they have "been through that" and "accept each other as a matter of cold fact". They are confident in their commitment to each other and feel that their love will only get better with time.
Overall, "Rocksteady" is an uplifting and playful song that celebrates the deep connection two people can have with each other.
