Tomorrow Never Comes
Big Head Todd and the Monsters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He sits behind her in the evening.
She turns and asks him for a light.
He worked so hard so he'd be something.
Just what it was she never knew.

He lays beside her as she's sleeping.
She asks if everything's alright.
Is there a secret he's been keeping?
She doesn't know anything he says.
He doesn't feel anything she says.

I've been waiting for too long for love like this
To let it slip away.
I've been waiting for your tender kiss.

She says, "I just might leave tomorrow."
He says, "Tomorrow never comes."
So we'll just learn to love our sorrow.

I'll love you tender as your sleeping.
I'll love you bitter through the day.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song 'Tomorrow Never Comes' by Big Head Todd and the Monsters are a poignant reflection on the fragility of human relationships. In the first stanza, the singer describes a man who has worked hard to become something but doesn't reveal what that something is. He is sitting behind a woman who asks him for a light. This suggests a close relationship between the two, but it's unclear whether they are lovers or family members. The second stanza finds the pair lying in bed together. The woman asks if everything is alright, and the man dismisses her concerns. This suggests that he may be keeping a secret, one that he doesn't want to share with her.

The chorus repeats the phrase, "I've been waiting for too long for love like this to let it slip away." This phrase suggests that the relationship between the two is special and that the singer is afraid of losing it. The final stanza sees the woman threatening to leave tomorrow, and the man responding with the repeated phrase, "Tomorrow never comes." This suggests that he is in denial about the seriousness of their relationship and unwilling to commit to her.

Overall, the song is a poignant meditation on the uncertainty of love and the fear of letting it slip away. It explores the complex emotions that arise between two people who are close but wary of getting too close.

God. I'm all of a sudden transported back to the best years of my life. Those glorious 90's...

This whole album is great. Another awesome band that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

@maxwelter9545

The live circuit they definitely have had a following but I agree with you.

@bluemeanee57

Guess you don't see him at Redrocks. Always recognized in the Mile High City.

@hannahhuffman7936

Agreed. I saw them at the Vogue in Indy several years back like early 2000's.

@Saybleu

Their shows definitely pull in the smart crowds 🎸

Be glad about that though. A gem in the shadows reserved for the unique taste. Like Jeff Buckley or Peter Green.

I was 20 living in Hilton Head SC working construction to fund my love affair with playing beach volleyball. My boss piled up all the scrap wood from the job site and we had a bonfire on the beach. He played this cd on repeat and we were all hooked! An amazing sound and thank God I had such amazing experiences!

This is THE SONG from this album for me.

My wife and I love it and have loved it since we first heard this album in early 90’s. The song itself is just incredibly haunting/melodic.

The lyrics are infinitely, poignant to a love affair that has reached the point of going thru the motions.

The guitar work is stellar and the overall mood of it all makes me listen and feel something every time I hear it. Great song.
