Big Heavy Stuff received a Best Alternative Release nomination at the 15th Annual ARIA Awards for their album Size of the Ocean.
Big Heavy Stuff is a four-piece band, featuring Greg Atkinson (Vocals, Guitars), Carolyn Polley (Guitars, Vocals), Eliot Fish (Bass, Vocals) and Nick Kennedy (Drums). The band was established in 1990 and is with the recording label Redline Records (Australia). Greg Atkinson had previously fronted the band Ups and Downs, Eliot Fish and Nick Kennedy were in The Templebears and Carolyn Polley was singer/guitarist for Dutiful Daughters.
Big Heavy Stuff were at the forefront of Australian independent guitar rock throughout the '90s. The band was formed out of the remains of Brisbane band, Ups and Downs by Greg Atkinson. Quickly signed to an indie imprint of a major label, Big Heavy Stuff was recognized as one of Australia's leading indie rock acts, alongside bands such as Crow, Something for Kate and Jebediah. Although never achieving substantial commercial success, the band was widely respected and critically acclaimed.
The band is not currently active however the members all continue to live in the Sydney area. Drummer Nick Kennedy and bassist Eliot Fish are members of other Sydney bands. Greg Atkinson has gone on to form the Worker Bees with brother (and ex-Ups and Downs bandmate) Darren, and more recently, indie chamber pop band Theories of Everything.
As of January 2006, there is a rumour circulating that the band have parted ways. This was announced on FBi Radio after close to a year of no activity and a long delay in a website update, the last of which was shortly before their last performance at the Come Together Music Festival at Luna Park Sydney.
Big Heavy Stuff played a reunion show in Sydney on April 18, 2009 at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville. The gig were filmed for the That Then This Now documentary.

Only One Thing
Big Heavy Stuff Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And then I would go around each and every one
Every rock I would pound until there's only stones
Every rock I would go around, each and every one
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
And if all cars break down instead of growing up
Every rock I would pound, each and every one
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing that I can break
There's only one thing
that I can break
The lyrics of Big Heavy Stuff's song "Only One Thing" are somewhat abstract and open to interpretation. The song describes the singer's desire to break something, specifically the notion that cars will continue to age and deteriorate over time. The repeated refrain of "there's only one thing that I can break" seems to suggest a sense of frustration or helplessness, as if the singer is faced with a problem that they cannot solve or a situation that they cannot change.
The line "every rock I would pound until there's only stones" could be interpreted as a metaphor for the singer's perseverance in the face of adversity. Rather than giving up, they will continue to push forward and try to overcome whatever challenge they are facing. The image of pounding rocks may also suggest a sense of futility or pointlessness, as if the singer is engaging in a fruitless task that will never truly be completed.
Overall, "Only One Thing" is a reflective and introspective song that invites listeners to contemplate their own struggles and frustrations. The repeated refrain of "there's only one thing that I can break" serves as a reminder that we are often limited in our ability to change things, and that the best we can do is to keep pushing forward and pounding away at the rocks that we encounter along the way.

I was there. The best part wasn't shown on here. It was when the lights went off and Trey goes "Alright..., it's just us again!". One of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
