His debut album, Finally Famous, was released in June 2011 and featured guest appearances from hip hop superstars Kanye West, Chris Brown, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, Wiz Khalifa, and Lupe Fiasco.
He was raised by his mother and grandparents who worked steadfastly to instill in him the principles of hard work and determination. Sean attended the Detroit Waldorf School, a school of art, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade where he was in 102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly. There, he met Kanye West after a radio interview in 2005 and got a chance to display his talent by freestyling for Mr. West, giving him a copy of his music and sending numerous tracks for him to critique. After months of submitting songs and numerous meetings, Sean finally got a call from Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to sign him. Two years later, West signed Big Sean to GOOD Music. Sean has cited West, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G., and J Dilla as his influences.
On September 30, 2007, Big Sean released his first official mixtape Finally Famous: The Mixtape. His hit single, "Get'cha Some", produced by WrighTrax, attained media attention and led to articles in The Source and the Detroit Metro Times. He also recorded a music video for "Get'cha Some", which was directed by Hype Williams. Sean released a second mixtape hosted by Mick Boogie on April 16, 2009, called UKNOWBIGSEAN. It featured the songs "Million Dollars", "Get'cha Some" and "Supa Dupa". This mixtape includes 30 tracks. Sean released a third mixtape hosted by Don Cannon on August 31, 2010, called Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG, which features include major artists like Bun B, Chip tha Ripper, Curren$y, Tyga, Drake, Mike Posner, Chuck Inglish, Asher Roth, Dom Kennedy, and Chiddy Bang. The mixtape includes 20 tracks.
Finally Famous, Sean's debut studio album, was released June 28, 2011, and spawned three hit singles; "My Last", "Marvin & Chardonnay" and "Dance (Ass)". When the songs "O.T.T.R." and "Flowers" were leaked in July 2011, speculation began of a new mixtape. Sean confirmed in an interview on June 28, 2011, that a collaborative mixtape between him and "two other guys in hip-hop that are just killing it right now" will be released "in a couple of weeks". Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y were the suspected featured rappers on the mixtape. However, Wiz Khalifa later confirmed that there would be no mixtape, claiming that the songs were created, "just for fun".

The album's production was primarily handled by No I.D., and Key Wane along with additional production from Hit-Boy, Da Internz, Mike Dean, Travis Scott, Xaphoon Jones, and Young Chop among others. Big Sean also stated in an interview that he was in the studio with fellow Detroit native Eminem. (Verse 1)
Man I was up early in the A.M., legs will be achin'
Feet will be achin' from dreams I was chasin'
Was always told "you won't see nathan just waitin'"
Like them hatin' ass niggas that just sit around hatin'
Walk around in aprons bitchin' and bakin'
I'm sayin my city like "we need another hero"
I'm tired of playin' the background like Tito
Jackass niggas, remind me of Steve-o
I put em in their place so I remind them of debo
Ay did you see that award show where I got my close up? Its all good I got it on Tivo
'Ye called me and my mama said "I think its time to sign"
Got signed 'round the time Common said "its for the people"
I'm tryna make it better for mines without a kilo
Made it out the D, boy and he ain't a d-boy
No, and he ain't a d-boy
Man these other niggas decoys
(Verse 2)
Now mama i done grown up too much for you to try to have me babied
And lately, I realized that I was (?)
We eatin' bout to have a perfect season I'll be damned if I get Randy Moss and Tom Brady-ed
I made a little change I can't truly complain
Datin' with a chick that got beauty and brains
But when them bitches come around talkin' bout sex, she gone say that I'm a dog, well all dogs go to heaven
My grandma used to talk about how college was so needed
Signed for a half a mill, now she like "who need a degree?"
At our family gatherings like "who need a CD?"
Everybody hands out like i said "who need a freebie?"
Man what's up? label said "he next up"
People said "he next up" man let's get it pressed up
I'm glad I never listened to y'all and let up
Stuck to my roots, call me Questlove
Call the radio and they gonna request us
So I'm headed to the bank cause I'm finna check up
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, (?) blase blah I'll prolly buy that tomorrow
For real, I'll prolly buy that tomorrow
Naw for real, I'll prolly buy that tomorrow
Nigga you ain't know?
The song "Tomorrow" by Big Sean talks about his journey from struggling to make it in the industry to finally getting signed to G.O.O.D Music. In the first verse, he talks about how he was always told that success won't come if he's just waiting around. He also mentions his haters who just sit and complain without taking action. He then talks about wanting to be a hero for his city and not just playing the background like Tito. He also mentions how he made it out of Detroit without being a drug dealer.
In the second verse, he talks about how he's now grown up and can't be treated like a child anymore. He mentions his success and how he can't complain about the little change he's made. He also mentions dating a girl who is both beautiful and smart but also how she calls him a dog when other women come around. He then talks about how his grandmother used to preach about the importance of college but now she feels it's not necessary after he got signed for half a million dollars. He also mentions his success and how people are now saying he's "next up" and how he's glad he never gave up and stuck to his roots.
