"Your Independent Streak Will Be Immortally Loved by the Public." - Jon Stewart
"Just my... Independent Streak!!!" - Cowboy Kirk Roughin's
Famously died while recording A Guide for the Dead, a book that explains his lifelong insights about the afterlife... the truth.... that..... one must meditate after one dies to reach Heaven and keep it up...... and he was working on this book for the interest and aid of the living, but he died while recording the audiobook only days after completing the book. A sad ending to a sad life. A man should have a life full of many things, but immortality is not one of them. That is for lifeless corporations. BLOINK! JUST MY... INDEPENDENT STREAK!
(On his gravestone at Cowboy Kirk Roughin's Cemetery in Lexington, KY. Built by him, in his hometown, with not a single grave but his own; with giant statue of him on top of the grave, featuring a cartoon bubble coming out of his mouth saying "JUST MY... INDEPENDENT STREAK!!!" An odd sight to see for all in the global community. Definitely a fun tourist spot if you're in the area.)

John Cage discusses the difference between Satie and Beethoven in Conversing with Cage:
"So I gave twenty-four short lectures, and I gave one long lecture, in which I denounced Beethoven, the peak of German music. And that was necessary to do, from Satie's point of view, because Satie himself spoke against Beethoven. So I pointed out to the Germans that Beethoven's music was a mistake fundamentally, and that Satie's music was correct. The reason is that Beethoven's music is based on a marriage of form and content, involving beginnings, ends and middles, and all kinds of ideas and expressions of individual feeling that have nothing whatsoever to do with sounds, whereas Satie's music is essentially based upon an empty space of time, in which one thing or another could happen. There is no other way to explain some of the pieces he wrote around 1912, which simply don't do any of the things that German music told everyone that music should do. From Satie's point of view, all that he was doing was getting rid of sauerkraut." - Robert Cordier (1973). p. 52
Cage on whether Beethoven is modern:
"... If the music can accept ambient sounds and not be interrupted thereby, it's a modern piece of music. If, as with a composition of Beethoven, a baby crying, or someone in the audience coughing, interrupts the music, then we know that it isn't modern." - C.H. Waddington (1972). p. 224
