Wolves
Big Wreck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh mark my words
In between the lines
And every little piece
Of the story's entwined

I always told my side my way

Oh, there was no more room
In the packet of wolves
They wouldn't let me in
Saw the mission was afoot

They showed us all we were without

Oh, they said bleed out your heart
If it's still beating for someone else
Trap all those chains
That keep you tethered, that keep you safe

A rosie little world
In your packet of wolves
A cosy little hang
In the back of your school

Those stories always get so old

Well is that one night
Going off the grid
I never said you didn't
I never said you did

And all of my favorite stories are about you

You said bleed out your heart
If it's still beating for someone else
Break all those chains
That keep you tethered, that keep you safe

They said bleed out your heart
If it's still beating for someone else
Trap all those chains
That keep you tethered, that keep you safe

Bleed out your heart
If it's still beating for someone else

Break all those chains
That keep you tethered, that keep you safe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Big Wreck's song "Wolves" are open to interpretation, but a possible explanation is that the singer is reflecting on their past experiences with a group of people who acted like a "packet of wolves," excluding those who didn't fit in. The singer tells their side of the story, but is ultimately left out of the group. They reflect on how the wolves encouraged them to open up and be true to their feelings, even if it meant breaking free from the safety of their chains. The singer seems to have unresolved feelings for someone who may have been part of the wolf pack, and they are encouraged to let go and "bleed out" their heart if it still beats for that person.

The lyrics contain several motifs, such as the "packet of wolves," the idea of breaking free from chains, and bleeding out one's heart. The use of repetition and rhyming helps to create a sense of continuity in the song. The lyrics also give room for interpretation, allowing listeners to relate the song to their own experiences.

First time I heard this song was about three months after I split with my wife and moved out of the family home. Woke up to the chorus. I don't think a song has ever hit me so hard. The words "bleed out your heart if it's still beating for someone else" went right through me. I was in a rented room in a strange house. I will NEVER forget sitting on that bed that morning. Probably because it's the closest to coming apart at the seams I've ever been. What a way to wake up. It still after 10 years stirs up emotion. I loved Ian's voice LONG before that morning, but to hear him sing those words, like that, was just too much for me that morning. I did make it lol. Still here! My heart beats for my children now. Pretty safe bet I'll never be bleeding out again! ✌
