During 1974 and 1975 Big Youth continued to record for other producers, as Glen Brown, The Abyssinians ('I Pay Thee', 'Dreader Than Dread'), Yabby You ('Yabby Youth' – later known as 'Lightning Flash (Weak Heart Drop)'), Bunny Wailer ('Bide'/'Black on Black') and Joe Gibbs ('Medecine Doctor'). His LP, Dread Locks Dread, was released 1975 and produced by Prince Tony Robinson.
However, Big Youth had also started releasing his own self-produced recordings on the "Negusa Nagast" and "Augustus Buchanan" labels in Jamaica. His first self-produced LP was Reggae Phenomemnon in 1974. His self-productions continued with the 1976 albums Natty Cultural Dread and Hit The Road Jack, using his own musicians, usually the Soul Syndicate band. Now Big Youth changed his deejay style to be more of a singjay than a toaster; even if his vocal range was never the greatest, his singing sides continued to improve in musical quality, and began to become as common as his DJ tunes. He signed to Virgin Records' Frontline label in 1977, and his first release on the label was the Isaiah First Prophet of Old album, and he also appeared in the feature movie Rockers. Together with U-Roy, I-Roy, Dennis Alcapone, Prince FarI, and Dillinger, Big Youth is one of the immortal early Jamaican reggae toasters which have inspired generations of following Jamaican dancehall deejays and American rappers.
The name of the band Sonic Youth is in part a tribute to Big Youth.

Why do the heathen rage
And the people imagine us a vain thing?
False kings of the earth had set themselves
And the rulers take counsel togather
Against the LORD God JAH Rastafari
And against his Anointed, saying,
Now come, let us break their bonds assunder
And cast away their cords from us
Your leader seated in his heaven shall laugh
The LORD God JAH Rastafari shall have them in derision
But then shall he speak unto them in his wrath
And vex to them in his sore displeasure
Co' yet have I set I kings upon the holy mountains of Zion
I will now declare the decree:
The LORD God JAH Rastafari hath said unto I and I and I
That thou art I sons, that today have I begotten thee
Thou aks if I and I and I shall give thee
The heathen for thine inheritance
And the uttermost part of the earth for thine possession
JAH shall break them with a rod of iron!
JAH shall dash them in pieces
Like a potter's vessel, I would say
So be wise therefore, ye kings
Be instructed, ye judges of the earth
Serve the LORD God JAH Rastafari with fear
Rejoice and tremble
Kiss InI the Son and lest he be angered
And perish from his ways
When his wrath is kindled but a little
And so blessed be all
Blesseth he everyone as I would say
And so blessed be all they
Who put their trust
In the true and living God JAH Rastafari
Then this man shall be like the holy mountains of Zion
That cannot be removed but abideth for ever
And so the mountains round about I-rusalem
And so the LORD God JAH Rastafari
Is running about his people as I would say
The lot of the wicked shall not rest upon this righteous
Unless this individual righteous put forth his hands unto iniquity
So do good O LORD God JAH Rastafari
Unto them that are good
And unto those that are upright in their hearts
For such a one as turn unto his crooked way, you don't say
The LORD God JAH Rastafari shall not turn his back
To give a count to the right of his people
A when he come he mek me tell you 'bout the song
He call a, about a song we call a Satta Amasagana
Amasagana, Seh, you nah pon yah but ya wan yah
You know Satta mek you pon yah
You know Satta mek you wan yah
That's if your mama never borne here
And if your papa never borne here
You are African, as I would say
Down inna Africa, as I would tell you
Seh Afri... Seh Afri... Africa!
Satta, Satta, Satta Amasagana
You gotta work the show and all the line-up
But you gotta work right through the song
And call ya Satta Amasagana, masagana
Gotta work the show and all the line-up
Gotta work right through the song
And call out Satta Amasagana
Irie! Give thanks. Irie...
The song "I Pray Thee" by Big Youth is a song about the struggle between good and evil, and the importance of serving and trusting in the true and living God, JAH Rastafari. The lyrics begin with a question, asking why the heathen rage and why people imagine things in vain. The lyrics then go on to describe how false kings of the earth and rulers take counsel together against JAH Rastafari and his anointed. The king seated in his heaven shall laugh, and JAH Rastafari shall have them in derision. The LORD God will break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. The lyrics urge kings and judges of the earth to serve the LORD God JAH Rastafari with fear, and to be wise and instructed. The song finishes by calling on individuals to do good unto those who are good and upright in their hearts, and to put their trust in the true and living God JAH Rastafari.

I pray thee,
I am praying to you,
Why do the heathen rage
Why are the non-believers angry
And the people imagine us a vain thing?
Why do people think our beliefs are meaningless?
False kings of the earth had set themselves
Pretend rulers have established themselves,
And the rulers take counsel togather
And the leaders consult with each other,
Against the LORD God JAH Rastafari
Against the God of Rastafarianism,
And against his Anointed, saying,
And against his chosen people, saying,
Now come, let us break their bonds assunder
Now let us break the chains of their followers,
And cast away their cords from us
And separate ourselves from their teachings,
Your leader seated in his heaven shall laugh
The leader, sitting in heaven, will laugh at them,
The LORD God JAH Rastafari shall have them in derision
God will mock them,
But then shall he speak unto them in his wrath
But he will speak to them in his anger,
And vex to them in his sore displeasure
And will trouble them with his displeasure,
Co' yet have I set I kings upon the holy mountains of Zion
Because I have placed my kings on the holy mountains of Zion,
I will now declare the decree:
I will now declare the decision,
The LORD God JAH Rastafari hath said unto I and I and I
God has spoken to us, saying,
That thou art I sons, that today have I begotten thee
You are my children, and I have given birth to you today,
Thou aks if I and I and I shall give thee
You ask if I will give you,
The heathen for thine inheritance
The non-believers as your inheritance,
And the uttermost part of the earth for thine possession
And the farthest reaches of the earth as your possession,
JAH shall break them with a rod of iron!
God will destroy them with an iron rod!
JAH shall dash them in pieces
God will break them into pieces,
Like a potter's vessel, I would say
Like a potter's clay jar,
So be wise therefore, ye kings
So be wise, kings,
Be instructed, ye judges of the earth
Be taught, judges of the earth,
Serve the LORD God JAH Rastafari with fear
Serve God with fear,
Rejoice and tremble
Be happy and afraid,
Kiss InI the Son and lest he be angered
Embrace the Son, or he will be angry,
And perish from his ways
And die away from his teachings,
When his wrath is kindled but a little
When he is only a little angry,
And so blessed be all
So blessed are all,
Blesseth he everyone as I would say
Blessed are all that are blessed, as I say
And so blessed be all they
So blessed are those,
Who put their trust
Who trust
In the true and living God JAH Rastafari
In the real and living God of Rastafarianism,
Then this man shall be like the holy mountains of Zion
Then this person will be like the sacred mountains of Zion,
That cannot be removed but abideth for ever
That cannot be taken away and lasts forever,
And so the mountains round about I-rusalem
And so the mountains around Jerusalem,
And so the LORD God JAH Rastafari
And so God of Rastafarianism,
Is running about his people as I would say
Is taking care of his people, as I put it
The lot of the wicked shall not rest upon this righteous
The fate of the wicked will not fall on the righteous,
Unless this individual righteous put forth his hands unto iniquity
Unless this righteous person does something wrong,
So do good O LORD God JAH Rastafari
So, do good God of Rastafarianism,
Unto them that are good
To those who are good,
And unto those that are upright in their hearts
To those who are pure in heart,
For such a one as turn unto his crooked way, you don't say
For he who turns to evil, as you know,
The LORD God JAH Rastafari shall not turn his back
God of Rastafarianism will not turn away,
To give a count to the right of his people
To give an account of his people
