Autumn Leaves {3rd Set}
Bill Evans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves
Drift by the window
The autumn leaves
Of red and gold

I see your lips
The summer kisses
The sunburned hands
I used to hold

Since you went away
The days grow long
And soon I'll hear
Old winter's song

But I miss you most of all
My darling
When autumn leaves
Start to fall

Since you went away
The days grow long
And soon I'll hear
Old winter's song

But I miss you most of all
My darling
When autumn leaves
Start to fall

Start to fall

Start to fall
Autumn leaves

The level of almost telepathy or synchronization between these three is marveling. I think the Bill Evans Trio was one of the most solid and excellent jazz units to exist on this planet.

I remember hearing this when it first came out, I was 15, into rock n roll. Completely changed my entire concept of music, what it was, what it could be. Scott LaFaro dying at 25, what a tragic loss. Trying to imagine where he could have gone. I always thought if Scotty hadn't died, he might even have saved Bill from his addiction to heroin.

Bill’s lines are inspired, so perfectly timed and selected in the flow of the tune. This is like the biblical version of ‘Leaves, godly improv.
