This posture of Bill Evans almost brings me to tears. He seems to be connecting with the divine, and I feel like an observer to something deeply personal and not fully understood. Perhaps he knows he's connecting to God; his body language shows it.
Evans' finesse and subtlety (not evident in his speech) is certainly evident in his mastery here.

Doom's sample actually came from the recording made at Montreaux Jazz Ferstival. Highly recommend that recording as it features Jack DeJohnette on drums and more extroverted improvisation from Bill.

Bill Evans said in an interview, that it was a miles davis composition, which was never picked up by other jazz musicians, exept from the bill evans trio, which is why, in his opinion, this tune is strongly associated with bill evans and his group.

Nardis has so many layers; something about the harmonic progression makes it feel so poignant. I think it’s impossible for jazz lovers not to attach some personal memory to Nardis. Bill did this piece justice in all the renditions he played.

From what I've read/heard, this tune IS a Miles Davis tune but Davis said that Evans played the song closest (if not exactly, I don't remember) to how he wanted the song played. Then again, who really knows?

Miles and Evens were friends, both classicly trained and looking to expand jazz from 4/4 8 to the bar. They learned from each other. If Miles composed this tune , I'm sure Bill Evens was the influence.

Miles composed this song to be played by Cannonball Adderley on his album 'Portrait of Cannonball'. Evans appeared as a sideman on that album and Miles was disappointed with the performance and said that Evans was the only one who played it in the way he wanted.

Excuse my bluntness, but Miles never said Bill Evans wrote "Nardis." Bill Evans himself said that Miles wrote this tune for Cannonball Adderley back in 1958, Cannonball was the first to record this tune, not Miles, not Bill. It's on Portrait of Cannonball. What Miles did say was that no one could play Nardis the way Bill did and could. I agree with this. But the tune's authorship has never been in question,not even by Bill Evans.

The tune was written for Canonball Adderley to play with the rest of the Great Quintet, with Evans on piano and Richard “Blue” Mitchell playing the trumpet part.

The recording session didn't produce a recording, as Miles wasn't happy about how the band got the piece - only Evans, he said, played it the way it was supposed to be played.

From then on, Adderley recorded it with his band, Miles never recorded it, and Evans played and developed it plenty.

Essentially a Bill Evans composition with a melody, perhaps,by Miles. One of my favorite bass solos of all time. Very free, very melodic and if reflects the essence of the tune in every note, no licks here. One of the greatest jazz groups of all time. If only these two cats could have played together for another 4 of 5 years, jazz might evolved in another direction.

Thanks. Bill was a superb accompanist also. He was the perfect foil for Miles, hence "Kind of Blue" which is (and probably will remain) the biggest selling jazz record in history. Bill was largely responsible for the sound of that album. Unfortunately, Miles, the ego-maniacal and abusive Miles harassed him out of the band. Also, Tony Bennett album with Bill is one of the best things Tony Bennett ever did as a vocalist.

Davis wrote it for Cannonball Adderly's album, A Portrait of Cannonball. He never wrote it for himself, but also he didn't care for the original recording very much. He said that Bill was the only who played the piece as he (Davis) envisioned it. So, Bill sort of took up the piece as his own.

Second of all this is not the only occasion with which Miles' name is on something he did not write. The be-bop tune Milestones (not the modal one) has been attributed to both Bird and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vincent but has Miles as composer. Likewise "Dig," which was really written by a 17 year old Jackie McClean. This is not unusual for the music business.Most of Duke Ellington's great songs list "Irving Mills" (his publisher) as one of the writers so Irving could get an additional taste.

In any case, we all were introduced to some music by somebody. That somebody could be your dad, friend, doesn't matter.
