Spring Is Here
Bill Evans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?
Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear

Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?

Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear

Overall Meaning

Bill Evans Trio's song "Spring is Here" is a melancholic tune about the arrival of spring and the singer's inability to feel the same excitement as everyone else around him. The lyrics express the bittersweet feeling of being surrounded by the beauty of spring while feeling lonely and unwanted. The singer wonders why he can't seem to find joy in the waltz or feel the breeze and stars like everyone else. He muses that perhaps it's because nobody loves him, which could explain his lack of ambition and motivation.

The song is a poignant reminder that even in the midst of beauty and joy, one can still feel lost and alone. The melancholic piano and bass create a haunting feel that complements the lyrics perfectly. Bill Evans Trio's rendition of the song is slow and reflective, adding to the emotional depth of the lyrics.

Overall, the song captures the essence of the human experience – the contradictions and complexities of our emotions, and the feeling of being adrift despite being surrounded by beauty.

I keep coming back to this. The most beautiful and awesome of all Bill Evans recorded songs. Brings tears and chills to me every time. Can't imagine a world without Bill Evans. He died too young, but gave us so much. I heard him at the Village Vanguard in 1964, and it changed my life.

Be sure also to check out two earlier piano versions of this Rodgers tune that are incredibly gorgeous too: Erroll Garner (1950) and Ahmad Jamal (1955).

Sophisticated harmony that worked beautifully. Scott La Faro played so sympathetically and in tune.
