If You Could See Me Now
Bill Evans Trio Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
One look is all you'd need to see the mood I'm in.
Perhaps then you'd realize I'm still in love with you.
If you could see me now, you'd find me being brave
And trying awfully hard to make my tears behave
But that's quite impossible, I'm still in love with you.
You'll happen my way on some mem'rable day
I'll try to smile but can I play the part
Without my heart behind the smile?
The way I feel for you I never could disguise
The look of love is written plainly in my eyes.
I think you'd be mine again if you could see me now.
The song "If You Could See Me Now" by the Bill Evans Trio is a melancholic song about someone who is trying to move on from a past love. However, the person is finding it difficult and the lyrics express the emotional struggle involved. The opening lines "If you could see me now, you'd know how blue I've been, one look is all you'd need to see the mood I'm in" immediately sets the tone of the song. The person feels sad and is struggling to cope with their emotions. The next verse "Perhaps then you'd realize I'm still in love with you" reveals that the person is not over their past love and still longs for them.
The chorus of the song captures a sense of hope as the lyrics talk about an eventual reunion, "You'll happen my way on some mem'rable day and the month will be May for a while". The singer is optimistic and believes there is a chance for the two to get back together, "I think you'd be mine again if you could see me now". However, the bridge of the song strikes a more bittersweet note as the singer realizes the difficulty of holding back their true feelings, "But can I play the part without my heart behind the smile?"
Overall, the song is a beautiful and poignant portrayal of the struggles of moving on from a past love, something that almost everyone can relate to in some way.

Bill was, and still is, my favorite musician. Occasionally I would catch him alone at the Village Vanguard and we'd chat for a few minutes. He was very shy, very introverted. He had very little confidence and was not aware just how extraordinary he really was. He'd always play my favorite piece "All the Things You Are." He was an amazing talent, a true artist, gifted beyond measure.

cada vez que ouço Bill Evans sinto que sua música é redescoberta a cada audição, em função da riqueza de improvisações, de seu perfeito fraseado e acima de tudo de sua imensa emoção que transborda em cada interpretação.
