Emily
Bill Evans Trio / Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Emily, Emily, Emily
Has the murmuring sound of may
All silver bells, coral shells, carousels
And the laughter of children at play

Say Emily, Emily, Emily
And we fade to a marvelous view
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily

(and we fade to a marvelous view)
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family

They see Emily, Emily
Too

Overall Meaning

The song "Emily" by Bill Evans is a romantic and dreamy tribute to a woman named Emily. The opening lines refer to the sweet sound of spring and imply that Emily has a similar soft and gentle presence. This is enhanced by the reference to silver bells and coral shells, which remind us of delicate and natural beauty. The next line, "carousels and laughter of children at play," suggests both youthfulness and playfulness. It is as if the singer is describing a woman who has a youthful spirit that joyfully enjoys life.

The song then moves into a dream-like sequence where the singer envisions himself and his lover, Emily, in a magical world. They are "alone and out of sight, seeing images in the firelight." These lines suggest a transcendental experience that is beyond everyday reality. He then imagines them as a family, and the others see Emily as well. The repetition of her name throughout the song adds to the ethereal quality, as if Emily is not just a person, but a symbol of beauty and wonder.

Bill Evans. The one thing guaranteed to make me stop whatever I am doing. And just be.

Played him a little while ago and had to sit and listen.

When you die, if you get to enter Heaven, these guys are playing in the lounge...

@jamesfarrell7465

From your lips to God's ears Terry!
Desde su labios a los oidos de Dios!

@judiedwards1156

And they will play all day and all night and you will never get tired of it, because you remember where you are

@annacottage4536

What a beautiful thought.

Nah Terry... In the Lift up to Heaven, this will be playing over the speakers on the way up... AND THEN you get to Heaven, and these guys are jamming hard in the Lounge Reception Area where you Check-In, and they play all day and night without no one getting tired, and it is literally... HEAVEN!

"They say humans are social animals, they can't live alone but you can live pretty well by yourself. Instead of feeling alone in a group it's better to have real solitude all by yourself. So it doesn't really matter if I'm there or not, right?
- You were afraid they'd abandon you, so you abandonned them. You detached yourself from the whole thing"

I have been listening to piano jazz for over 50 years, some of the practitioners that I have listened too have been quite memorable, but I always return to Bill Evans. Such a great shame he is no longer with us. David
