Emily
Bill Evans Trio feat. Stan Getz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Has the murmuring sound of may
All silver bells, coral shells, carousels
And the laughter of children at play
Say Emily, Emily, Emily
And we fade to a marvelous view
Two lovers alone and out of sight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily
(and we fade to a marvelous view)
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily
Too
The song Emily by Bill Evans Trio featuring Stan Getz is a romantic tune that metaphorically compares the beauty and peacefulness of the month of May to a woman named Emily. The lyrics emphasize the gentle sound of Emily's name and its ability to conjure up images of happiness and nostalgia. The singer speaks of Emily's association with silver bells, coral shells, and carousels, all of which are symbols of joy and amusement. The reference to the laughter of children at play creates an idyllic scene of carefree innocence and merriment.
The song then transitions into a dream-like state where the singer and his lover are transported to a magical place where they are alone and out of sight. The verse speaks of seeing images in the firelight, which symbolizes the warmth and comfort of a home. As the singer visualizes a happy family, he once again thinks of Emily, who embodies the essence of all things beautiful. The song ends with a repetition of Emily's name, emphasizing her significance as a symbol of happiness, love, and warmth.

"They say humans are social animals, they can't live alone but you can live pretty well by yourself. Instead of feeling alone in a group it's better to have real solitude all by yourself. So it doesn't really matter if I'm there or not, right?
- You were afraid they'd abandon you, so you abandonned them. You detached yourself from the whole thing"

I have been listening to piano jazz for over 50 years, some of the practitioners that I have listened too have been quite memorable, but I always return to Bill Evans. Such a great shame he is no longer with us. David
