Love Letters in the Sand
Bill Haley And The Comets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a day like today
We pass the time away
Writing love letters in the sand

How you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand
You made a vow that you would ever be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you

Now my broken heart aches
With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Now my broken heart aches

With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bill Haley And The Comet's song "Love Letters In The Sand" is a nostalgic recollection of a long-lost love. The singer talks about passing time by writing love letters in the sand, reminiscing about happy moments spent with the person who was once the love of his life. But these memories are not just happy, they are also bittersweet because the love that once brought them together, now only causes pain. The singer expresses his heartbreak at the fact that the person who once made a commitment to him did not keep their promise and his love letters are now lost in the sea, washed away by the waves that symbolize the passing of time.

The lyrics of "Love Letters In The Sand" capture the wistful feeling of nostalgia and lost love, a theme that continues to resonate with listeners today. The song was a commercial success upon its release and has been covered by numerous artists over the years. Its popularity led to the formation of a dance called the “Love Letter Waltz” and it even inspired a film of the same name in 1978.

Great song from later Bill Haley. Jerry Lee Lewis did this in 1956/57 but I think it is even older and was done by Mac Wiseman and was even older again and done in the 1930s. A great song never dies.
