Medley met his singing partner Bobby Hatfield while attending California State University, Long Beach. The pair began singing as a duo in 1962. Their first single was "Little Latin Lupe Lu"; their first hit was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", produced by Phil Spector in 1964. Follow-up hits included "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" and "Unchained Melody".
The duo broke up in 1968, but returned with another hit in 1974, "Rock And Roll Heaven", and they continued to appear together until Hatfield's death in November 2003. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2003 by one of their biggest fans, Billy Joel.
Medley also had a moderately successful solo career. In 1987 his duet with Jennifer Warnes, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", was included on the Dirty Dancing motion picture soundtrack album and the single reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also won a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In my room, in my room
In this world I lock out all my worries and my fears
In my room, in my room
Do my dreaming and my scheming
Lie awake and pray
Do my crying and my sighing
Now it's dark and I'm alone
But I won't be afraid
In my room, in my room
In my room, in my room
In my room, in my room
The lyrics of Bill Medley's "In My Room" express the singer's desire for a safe haven where he can escape from the outside world and be true to himself. The first two lines describe this imaginary world as a place where he can share his secrets without fear of judgment or rejection. The repetition of the phrase "in my room" reinforces the idea that this is a personal space where he can retreat from the chaos of everyday life.
The following lines reveal more about what goes on in this private domain. Medley sings about how he dreams and schemes, about how he spends his sleepless nights praying or crying, and about how he revisits past joys and sorrows. He implies that being alone in his room allows him to process his emotions and find solace in his own thoughts. The final lines suggest that he has achieved a sense of peace and security, despite the darkness that surrounds him.
Overall, "In My Room" is a poignant reflection on the importance of finding a space where one can be authentic and vulnerable. The lyrics speak to anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by the demands of the world and longed for a moment of respite.
