The Prisoners Song
Bill Monroe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I wish I had someone to love me,
Someone to call me their own.
Oh, I wish I had someone to live with,
'Cause I'm tired of living alone.

Oh, meet me tonight in the moonlight,
Please meet me tonight all alone.
For I have a sad story to tell you,
It's a story that's never been told.

I'll be carried to the new jail tomorrow,
Leaving my poor darling alone.
With the cold prison bars all around me,
And my head on a pillow of stone.

Now I have a grand ship on the ocean,
All mounted with silver and gold.
And before my poor darling would suffer,
Oh, that ship would be anchored and sold.

Now, if I had the wings of an angel,
Over these prison walls I would fly.

And I'd fly to the arms of my darling,
And there I'd be willing to die.

Overall Meaning

In Bill Monroe's song, The Prisoner's Song, the singer is expressing his desire for companionship, expressing his yearning for someone to love him, call him their own and live with as he's tired of living alone. He wants to meet someone in the moonlight, alone, to tell them his sad, untold story. The prisoner knows that he will be carried to the 'new jail' the next day, leaving his beloved alone with the prison bars separating them. His head will rest on a stone pillow in the new jail, making his punishment even more difficult.

The singer's sadness is increased as he thinks about his grand ship on the ocean, presented with riches of silver and gold, knowing that he would rather sell the ship than put his love through pain. He concludes by wishing he had the wings of an angel to fly over the prison walls to meet his darling and be with them until death. This song expresses the sadness of solitary living, the pain of being incarcerated, and the deep longing for love and freedom.

Bill Monroe is the best

patersondave44

bill could do anything he wanted to, and it's okay with me. i was at berkeley, ca, when sam bush played with electric bass and snare drum, and i was okay with it, but others booed the group until bush got a fiddle and played some hotshot fiddle tune, probably orange blossom special. then they stopped booing, but if you don't like what someone plays, just scroll down past that, let them breathe. RIP bill monroe, the father and mother of great bluegrass music.

Now, this is interesting. Vocally, this is the only non-wimpy version of The Prisoner's Song I've heard, but Monroe and the accompanists are in two totally different musical directions. Don't really care for it.
