Footprints In The Snow
Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now some folks like the summertime when the they can walk about
Strolling through the meadow green it's pleasant there no doubt
But give me the wintertime when the snow is on the ground
For I found her when the snow on the ground
I traced her little footprints in the snow
I found her little footprints in the snow
I bless that happy day when Nellie lost her way
For I found her when the snow was on the ground

I dropped in to see her there was a big round moon
Her mother said she just stepped out but would be returning soon
I found her little footprints and I traced them in the snow
I found her when the snow was on the ground
Now she's up in heaven she's with the angel band
I know I'm going to meet her in that promised land

But every time the snow falls it brings back memories
For I found her when the snow was on the ground

Overall Meaning

The song "Footprints in the Snow" by Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys is a melancholic tale about finding love in the wintertime. The opening lines describe how some people prefer the sunshine and greenery of summertime, but the singer prefers the cold and snowy season because he found his love, Nellie, when the snow was on the ground. The singer then talks about how he came to find Nellie, tracing her little footprints in the snow. It is clear that he is deeply grateful for the moment when he found her because it led to a lifetime of love.

The second verse describes the singer's visit to Nellie's home one evening when she was not there. Her mother informed him that Nellie had gone out, but would return soon. The singer then saw Nellie's footprints in the snow and followed them, eventually finding her. The final verse is bittersweet. Nellie has passed away and is now in heaven, but every time it snows, the singer is reminded of the day he found her. He knows that they will be reunited one day in the promised land.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on finding love and the enduring power of memory. Despite the sadness and loss, there is a deep sense of gratitude for the time that was shared.

Don't mention it Rikk. I love nature and can't tell you how many of these tracks I've enjoyed in the woods in mud or snow. Haven't killed anything since 1999. Good on me for that. Good on you for letting me re-live those moments in my current state of decrepitude! You are a blessin' to me. Now the cryin's done...You're a real mate, mate.
