I'm On My Way To The Old Home
Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Back in the days of my childhood
In the evening when everything was still
I used to sit and listen to the foxhounds
With my dad in the old Kentucky hills

I'm on my way back to the old home
The road winds on up the hill
But there's no light in the window
That shined long ago where I live

Soon my childhood days were over
I had to leave my old home
For dad and mother were called to heaven
I's left in this world all alone

I'm on my way back to the old home
The road winds on up the hill
But there's no light in the window
That shined long ago where I live

High in the hills of old Kentucky
Stands the fondest spot in my memory
I'm on my way back to the old home
The light in the window I long to see

I'm on my way back to the old home
The road winds on up the hill

But there's no light in the window
That shined long ago where I live

This is my favorite bluegrass song of Bill Monroe's. All of my folks have always meant the world to me & stood by me & got old on me ...and I miss them so. It's mostly 'music' that brings to mind the afternoon porch settin and pickin & sangin with them & family & neighbors & cross town neighbors & cousins that made it happen every Sat early afternoon thru the night a coming. Wed pick out of GrannyDollies garden & she'd keep us working til around 430 then we got to pick music.
We all looked forward to that part of our week ♡♡♡
