You
Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
Memories of you, sweetheart, still haunt me so
Everytime I hear your name I almost cry
But, there's just one thing that I want you to know
I'll love you till the day I die

Oh, we let other people tear us apart
And for no good cause you see
But, I hope and pray you'll be mine someday
You'll live and love each other, you and me

So if you go, don't say goodbye
For you know just what you will cause
Don't leave me here to face this lonesome world
For without you I'm the one that is lost

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In the song Memories of You, Doc Watson expresses the pain and longing he feels for his sweetheart. He reminisces about their past and how they let other people tear them apart for no good reason. Despite the separation, he hopes and prays that they will be together someday and live and love each other. The lyrics convey the strong emotions of heartbreak and the urgency to be reunited with his beloved.

The chorus reinforces the message of the song as Watson's memories of his sweetheart still haunt him, and he will love her till the day he dies. He pleads with his sweetheart not to say goodbye if she leaves, for it will cause him unbearable pain. Without her, he is lost and alone in the world.

Lyrics:
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

It was on a moonlight night

The star is shining bright

And they whispered from on high

Your love has said good-bye

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and said good-bye

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

It is on a moonlight night

The stars shining bright

They whispered from high

Your love has said good-bye

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining

Shine on the one that's gone and said good-bye

Never forget when Steve Martin & John Candy are singing this in Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

Yes!
I had to wait for the credits to find out the name.
Too funny how a song has so many different memories and different versions.

Fun fact: When I was a kid back in the late 80's / early 90's I went to a bluegrass convention with my dad. I think it was in South Carolina, but there was a dining area kind of like a school cafeteria and I sat down at the table directly in front of Bill Monroe and we shared a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
