He’s without question the most important metal bassist. Hell, I would say he’s the second most important person in metal history period (after Iommi) because his lyrics codified metal themes and imagery. And of course Ozzy and Bill Ward are the next two most important because they helped create metal too!

Today is 2022, and those who are young today probably think that this music was played on the radio iduring eraly 70s. But that was not the case at all.

@1994clue Maybe not. BTO reportedly did the same thing with "You Ain't Seen Noth'n Yet". Needed one more song. They had used the tune for sound checks, or something like that. The added to the album and it became one of the biggest hits.

This is what metal bands today are missing, just that pure volume and energy. This is heavier than any deathcore crap I’ve heard recently. They all think you need drop G tuning and demon vocals to be heavy. All you really need is volume and distortion.

You do realize Black Sabbath tuned down right? Like three albums in they started tuning to C#, sure it was for Ozzy's range and Tony's fingers but it's still a piece of the "heavy downtuned guitar" history.

Lunk I saw Black Sabbath at Bayfront Arena in St Petersburg,Fla in 1970. Really before they were famous and the arena was relatively empty. It was back in the General admission days and I was right up at the stage. They were quite good even back then and loud as hell! It wasn’t till Deep Purple and Ted Nugent that they volume went up louder than Sabbath back then. Great concert!

Damn, can't imagine how it must've felt to see that performance. I used to have the 2 half hour shows they played in Paris in 70 on vhs. It fucking rocked. I remember when HEAVEN AND HELL came out. 40 years ago. Ha. Sabbath still rules. BLACK SABBATH. 🤘

Their best performances were these early ones as with the later Paris shows etc. What matter is the focus on the words and singing.Indeed if you watch various live performance it is clear the more arm waving and prancing about the weaker the actual musical performances. Compare with 1974. It is just less focused and tight by all. Too much arm waving and telling the audience to get excited. In Paris Ozzy was like Jim Morrison, completely focused on the SONGs and lyrics. The best!

@Jusztin Németi the 1970 Paris/Brussels show says otherwise. War Pigs, and the self-titled song Black Sabbath is incredible, and ahead of it's time. Ozzy headbangs and jumps around the stage, like he was possessed. That being said, I haven't seen anything top it in the decades following it, which was caught on film, at least.

I had the pleasure of selling Geezer a keyboard back in the early 80s when I worked at a large music center in St. Louis. He wanted a new 'toy'. It was a Roland Juno 60. Very pleasant guy. I shared how I wore out my copy of the 'Paranoid' album when I was a kid. I asked if Ozzie was as crazy as it seems. He took a pause ... then replied, "I'm afraid Ozzie is beyond repair." (Laughs).

@mwolfod Hi mwolfod. I worked at McMurray Music from 1980 to 1985. These were exciting times at the store as the original owner retired and his son, John came back and built the store into one of the best music stores in the nation. This was before the likes of Guitar Center and there was no Sweetwater online. Man was it fun to work with and learn from John. Most national touring acts would either stop by the store or call us to deliver something to the Arena, Kiel, etc. Many 'brushes with greatness' over the years including Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Bill Brufford, America, The Eagles, on and on. You never knew who was next. Another thrill was when Chuck Berry came in and walked the guitar gallery upstairs in the store. Sure enough he picked out a red Gibson ES335. As he was walking to pay for his purchase, John, ever the salesman rushed to bring out a limited edition 335--ivory white with gold trim. "I'll take that one, too," said Mr. Berry. What blew my mind is he didn't even play either one of the guitars! Loved that job. Learned a lot.

I had no idea the store had a national reputation and was a magnet for front line national acts. Blonde Becky McMurray was in my Sunday school class (~1969), and I vaguely remember her (older?) brother John also attending. In 1980 I was managing the luggage department at Northwest Plaza Famous Barr. Chuck Berry came in, paid cash for a set of our best leather Hartmann luggage, and told me a dirty joke as a bonus.

Yes, i don't know what's up with the guitar solo on the studio version but it sounds like shite, like it was recorded on one of those cheap shite mini amps, it let down the entire song.

The beat club performance was the first version I heard, i didn't hear the studio version until a while after it and i always thought this version was vastly superior to the studio version.

This must be quite a rare instance of Tony using Orange amps. It works great for his sound, quite a bit more distortion than on his early Laney`s and Super Lead`s. Almost sounds like his modern guitar sound, as I heard in concert. It's a shame those amps don`t get more recognition although they are on many famous records (Jimmy Page preferred a small Orange amp over his walls of Super Leads for recording). I tried one once, it was fantastic though felt quite alien with the controls. I wonder if he's using his normal treble booster or if the Orange`s have a naturally bright sound. Either way it works and I regret somewhat having gone for a Dual Super Lead vs. that Orange I tried. I really sounded great. Although the clean channel on the DSL is basically a Super Lead and really sings beautifully if pushed hard. I got some vintage tubes in and it sounds gorgeous but the second channel somehow doesn't have quite the sound I was looking for.

I had a chance to test Tony`s modern Laney heads a bunch of times. They really sing too. Though scary monsters they are. Turn the dial a few mm and suddenly you go from tasteful guitar testing to disrupting the entire store. Had to do it though.

Also rocking his white triple PU SG. Quite rare indeed. I believe this guitar was stolen later on though I might be confusing it with another one.

Sabbath ruled the "70s. Tony Iommi was one of the first metal gods, one of the best guitarist ever. Geezer is one of the best bassists ever. Bill Ward one of the best drummers.
Ozzie was and is the voice of heavy metal. He is Mr.Crowley.
