Lean on Me
Bill Withers Lyrics
Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me (call me)
If you need a friend (call me) call me uh huh (call me) if you need a friend (call me)
If you ever need a friend (call me)
Call me (call me) call me (call me) call me
(Call me) call me (call me) if you need a friend
(Call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me)

Withers' hardscrabble childhood in the coal mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia was the inspiration for "Lean on Me", which he wrote after he had moved to Los Angeles and found himself missing the strong community ethic of his hometown. He lived in a house that was broken down and was on the poor side of town.

RIP Bill Withers.
I grew up listening to this song with my oldest brother. Good memories of when I was just a little guy.

This was played at my brother's funeral in 1973. It gave my family strength at a time when we were broken. I will always love Bill Withers because of the gift he gave us. <3

The lyrics of "Grandma's Hand" made me love my grandma even more. She departed this life 28 years ago but her memories continue to live on. It's as if Bill met her and learn about her ways.

My mom died of cancer back in late 2019 and I remember the day after I was in the car with my dad, and he turned on this song. We both started crying and it was one of the most powerful moments in my life. RIP to this legend I will never be able to express my love for this song.
