Just You and I
Billie Eilish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not true
Tell me I've been lied to
Cryin' isn't like you
Ooh
What the hell did I do?
Never been the type to
Let someone see right through
Ooh

Maybe won't you take it back?
Say you were tryna make me laugh
And nothin' has to change today
You didn't mean to say, "I love you"
I love you and I don't want to
Ooh

Up all night on another red eye
I wish we never learned to fly
I
Maybe we should just try
To tell ourselves a good lie
I didn't mean to make you cry
I

Maybe won't you take it back?
Say you were tryna make me laugh
And nothin' has to change today
You didn't mean to say, "I love you"
I love you and I don't want to
Ooh

The smile that you gave me
Even when you felt like dyin'

We fall apart as it gets dark
I'm in your arms in Central Park
There's nothin' you could do or say
I can't escape the way I love you
I don't want to, but I love you
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Overall Meaning

The song "i love you" by Billie Eilish is a melancholic reflection on a relationship that is coming to its end. The song starts with the lyrics, "It's not true, Tell me I've been lied to, Cryin' isn't like you," which suggests that the singer has been hurt or betrayed by their partner. The next line, "What the hell did I do?" shows that the singer takes some responsibility for the demise of the relationship. The line "never been the type to let someone see right through" suggests that the singer has been hiding their true feelings and thoughts.

The singer then asks their significant other to take back the words "I love you" because they don't want to hear it. The bridge of the song changes the tone to a more positive one. The singer reminisces about the good times they had together, singing about late nights and sunny days in Central Park. They also acknowledge that they can't escape their feelings of love for their partner, despite their wishes to move on. The song ends on the same somber note it began, with the singer repeating "Ooh" in a mournful tone.

Overall, "i love you" is a heart-wrenching portrayal of a relationship that has lost its spark. The lyrics suggest pain, regret, and a longing for things to go back to the way they were. The song captures the complex emotions surrounding the end of a relationship, specifically the struggle to let go of someone you love.

I think it was such a beatiful touch that all the outfits were hers from all the stages in her career when she was struggling. It felt ten times more personal. She wasn't just singing she was talking to us.
