But Beautiful
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is funny or it's sad
It's quiet or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad
But beautiful

Beautiful to take a chance
And if you fall, you fall
And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's heartache any way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be
But beautiful
I know

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's heartache any way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be

But beautiful
I know

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song "But Beautiful," the lyrics observe that love is a complex and multifaceted thing. The song acknowledges the contradictory nature of love, highlighting its various emotional shades - from joy and exhilaration to heartache and despair. The lyrics suggest that love can be both an enlivening and a cruel experience, but perhaps more importantly it is "but beautiful." The use of the word "but" in the song's title suggests a paradox. While love is often painful, it is also sublime and worthwhile. The lyrics express that even though love can be so unpredictable and frustrating, in the end, it is still beautiful.

The second stanza of the song suggests the idea that taking a chance on love is one of the most beautiful things in life. The prospect of falling in love and possibly getting hurt seems like a worthwhile risk. The singer's thought of not minding taking the chance even if she falls portrays the idea that the happiness of love often overshadows the sadness.

The bridge of the song echoes the sentiment of the earlier stanzas, highlighting the unpredictable and tumultuous nature of love. The stanza again reinforces that if the singer had the chance to embrace love, she would never let go, and that, in itself, is beautiful. The lyrics of the song seem to present a positive, if somewhat conflicted, view of love- acknowledging its bittersweet nature while still emphasizing its beauty.

Over 60 years since she recorded this song, and still no one can touch her definitive version.
So emotional and beautiful !

But Betty Carter...

Quite simply one of the most touching and beautiful----if not THE MOST----and that's saying alot when referring to Billie Holiday.
The aching way she bends the musical notes and wonderful phrasing of words for added dramatic effect.
Ray Ellis's heavy strings have drawn ire over the decades, but how can you argue when results are as moving and beautiful such as this 😥😥😥

Happy heavenly 106th birthday to Billie holiday, dubbed the female voice of Jazz, certainly the most celebrated of all, nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young

Exquisite, as always with Lady Day!

My favorite story about Billie Holiday concerns a break that she took between singing sets at a nightclub in New York. She stepped out in front of the club and was quietly smoking a cigarette when two policemen approached and arrested her. They saw her only as a black woman and had no idea that she was one of the most beloved and popular singers in the country.
