Deep Song
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lonely grief is hounding me
Like the lonely shadow hounding me
It's always there just out of sight
Like a fragling dream on a lightening night

Lonely wind cries out my name
Sad as haunted music in the rain
It's born of grief and born of woe
But I hear it call and I've got to go

Where can I be headed for
The blues call in my north
To lick my heart once more
Love lives in a lonely land
Where there's no helping hand to understand

Why does it bring this hate to me
Why it don't matter why
I only know misery has to be part of me

Never hope to count on love
To be a partner of that heaven above
Never hope to understand
Love is a barren land

A lonely land
A lonely land

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's "Deep Song" is a beautifully melancholic piece capturing the misery, heartbreak and loneliness of lost love. The singer powerfully describes the experience of being haunted by grief and woe, never too far away, like a shadow, or a fleeting dream on a stormy night. This feeling of isolation is further illustrated by the lonely wind, which calls to her with a sad and haunting music, and the image of a land where love dwells, yet there's no helping hand to understand. The singer seems resigned to the fact that misery is a part of her, though she can't comprehend why it brings such hate, and why she can't understand love. The title of the song is apt, as there's a deep and raw quality to the emotion expressed in the lyrics.

One of the most remarkable things about "Deep Song" is the incredible range of emotions that Billie Holiday manages to convey through her voice. She's able to go from a soft and contemplative delivery, to a fierce and heartbreaking cry, all within the span of a few bars. This kind of emotional depth is what made her one of the most influential jazz singers of all time.

Ive had this on a 78 since i was in my early 20s. 35 years later its still my fav drinking alone song. Play it over and over. The chord movement with her voice tears my heart out late at night alone...

@phaasch

This is an empty street on a wet night in an unknown town. A town you have come to unbidden and alone, because there's nowhere and no one to go back to.
This lyric was so far ahead of its time, and as for the rendition, there are barely words to describe it. Utterly desolate, utterly beautiful.

It’s pure film noir. Absolutely perfect for a black and white film

Une voix pure, chaude et d'une harmonie exquise

If this song doesn't put a hook in you, check your pulse, you 're already dead. Magnificent Lady.

Long before Amy's "Black To Black", there was Lady Day's bleak
overview of love. Utterly brilliant and desolate, no wonder she
was one of Amy's favourite vocalists.

@alantucson

This was the Lady Day's favorite song according to her closest friends. It wasn't the most famous, but it described her heart better than any. It was one of on the recording I drove my sister and bro in Law mad by playing all night. LOL. Think it was one of the verve.. Anyhow, they loved it too and forgave me. This album was amazing.  "Do your duty", "Crazy in Love", "Nobody's business", Was is verve or Decca? She was fully backed up by an orchestra.

@billie44

+Alan S. Decca /verve was in the 50's
