Do Your Duty
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I call three times a day
Come and drive my blues away
When you come, be ready to play
Do your duty

If you want to have some love
Give your baby your last buck
Don't come quackin' like a duck
Do your duty

I heard you said you didn't love me
Down at Mrs. Brown
I don't believe a word they say
She's the lyinest woman in town

When I need attention at home
I'll call you on the phone
Come yourself, don't send your friend Jones
Do your duty

If my radiator gets too hot
Cool it off in lot of spots
Give me all the service you've got
Do your duty

If you don't know what it's all about
Don't sit around my house and pout
If you do you'll catch your mama tippin' now
Do your duty

If you make your own bed hard
That's the way it lies
I'm tired of sleepin' by myself
But you're too dumb to realize

I'm not tryin' to make you feel blue
I'm not satisfied with the way you do
I've got to help you find somebody too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Holiday's song "Do Your Duty" can be interpreted as a call to action for a lover who is not meeting their obligations in the relationship. The singer is instructing their partner to step up and fulfill their duties as a partner, whether that be to provide love or to take care of practical matters. The repeated refrain of "Do your duty" emphasizes the importance of fulfilling these obligations.

The song seems to be addressing a specific person, as the singer mentions hearing that their partner doesn't love them and calls out a woman named Mrs. Brown for spreading rumors. However, the overall message can be applied to any relationship where one person is not meeting expectations.

What is especially striking about the lyrics is the way they blend practical concerns with emotional ones. The singer not only wants their partner to provide love and attention, but also to take care of things like fixing a radiator or driving away their "blues". This suggests that both practical and emotional labor are important in a relationship.

Overall, "Do Your Duty" is a powerful call to action that highlights the importance of fulfilling obligations in a relationship, both practical and emotional.

Thanks for the lyrics. I do believe the line is "she's the lienist woman in town" as in liar. The line before she sings "I don't believe a word they say."

I hear music like this and almost come to a cry. Because I think of those who have come and gone for the life that I, even I live. Which I have taken for granted 1000% and then some. Live your life and do your Duty!!!! What ever it may be. So those who came before you live on through your freedom! Anything less would be a dereliction of freedom. Live free or die! Regardless of the costs! It is better to live but one second as a free man, then a lifetime of servitude.

"Liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

Samuel Adams

@EmilyUpjohn

Bessie Smith recorded "Do Your Duty" in November 1933, so your note up top is incorrect -- this song was not written in 1949.

@RoundMidnightTV

I have made the corrections, thank you.
