Don´t explain
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Hush now, don't explain
I know you ain't staying
I'm glad you're back
Don't explain

Quiet, don't explain
You've mixed with some dame
Skip that lipstick
Don't explain

You know that I love you
And what love endures
Nothing rates above you
When I'm so completely yours

Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
Right and wrong don't matter
When you're with me, sweet

Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain
My life's yours, love
Don't explain

You know that I love you
And what love endures
Nothing rates above you
When I'm so completely yours

Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
But, right and wrong don't matter
When you're with me, sweet

Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain

My life's yours, love
Don't explain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billie Holiday's song "Don't Explain" describe a situation of a woman who knows her man has been unfaithful, but chooses not to confront him about it. Instead, she pleads with him to stay and assures him of her love, despite his indiscretions. She asks him not to explain, indicating that she would prefer to overlook his infidelity and continue their relationship as if nothing happened.

The lines "Cry to hear folks chatter / And I know you cheat / Right and wrong don't matter / When you're with me, sweet" express the woman's disregard for social norms and moral standards, as she is willing to accept her lover's infidelity as long as he remains with her. She believes that their love transcends any wrongdoing on his part and that nothing else matters except their relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "Don't Explain" showcase Billie Holiday's emotive singing style and ability to explore complex themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness with sensitivity and nuance.

This song truly gives me straight 4 minutes of tingles and long moments of pain, sadness, joy, all mixed together afterwards. I love this woman, such an underappreciated gem.

5 years after this comment, I'd like to think she was not underrepresented, but, rather secretly admired.

Underappreciated, perhaps, but secretly admired, "But Beautiful "...

The song writing is decades ahead of its time. It's perfectly done. Then when she sings she manages to draw out the frustration and pain of infidelity to match the depth of the lyric. Amazing

I came to the US in 1979 at the age of 14 with nothing but hopes of higher education. I discovered Billie Holiday as a teen in the radio and began to save money to buy her records. To this day, I feel the raw pain if a hard life in her voice. Although her difficult life was very different from my difficult life, I nonetheless benefitted from the catharsis that came from delving into her pain as she channeled it through her gritty, raw, and poignant voice. It was not like anything I had heard before and it is unlike anything I've heard since. Ms. Holiday is and will remain a truly unique and original "blues shouter".

I don't hear any shouting in this song or any other song I ever heard Billie Holiday sing. Ma Rainy was a 'blues shouter". To me, Billie's singing is so pure. to me, she was one of the first female singers to articulate the words of a song in this way. Her voice was paramount. She sings the way a soprano or alto saxophone would play those notes. I hope you did achieve your personal goals. Obviously, Billie's music must've been a big help to you.

@Frank Fetters
Thank you for your kind reply. I completely agree that Billie's voice was a pure instrument and I don't recall her ever shouting in any song. I was using the phrase "blues shouter" not in a literal sense, but as a post-mic era term-of-art that described a singer with a powerful enough voice to be able to sing unamplified with an orchestra...something we now call "unplugged". I've had the pleasure of seeing rare footage of Ms. Holiday sing unplugged and she certainly did fit that definition. I also had the pleasure of hearing, live, two other ethereal singers who fit the blues shouter category, namely Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan! The former in Virginia (where Ella was from) and the latter at Kansas University's Hoch auditorium (not sure how we got so lucky to get an intimate concert of such a legend)
I just wish I'd had an iphone back then to have recorded the treasures I was lucky enough to have witnessed! :D

Frank Fetters

@H Z I envy you. that must have been extraordinary to witness those colossal talents!
