Don't Explain
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hush now, don't explain
I know you ain't staying
I'm glad you're back
Don't explain

Quiet, don't explain
You've mixed with some dame
Skip that lipstick
Don't explain

You know that I love you
And what love endures
Nothing rates above you
When I'm so completely yours

Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
Right and wrong don't matter
When you're with me, sweet

Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain
My life's yours, love
Don't explain

You know that I love you
And what love endures
Nothing rates above you
When I'm so completely yours

Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
But, right and wrong don't matter
When you're with me, sweet

Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain

My life's yours, love
Don't explain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billie Holiday's song "Don't Explain" describe a situation of a woman who knows her man has been unfaithful, but chooses not to confront him about it. Instead, she pleads with him to stay and assures him of her love, despite his indiscretions. She asks him not to explain, indicating that she would prefer to overlook his infidelity and continue their relationship as if nothing happened.

The lines "Cry to hear folks chatter / And I know you cheat / Right and wrong don't matter / When you're with me, sweet" express the woman's disregard for social norms and moral standards, as she is willing to accept her lover's infidelity as long as he remains with her. She believes that their love transcends any wrongdoing on his part and that nothing else matters except their relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "Don't Explain" showcase Billie Holiday's emotive singing style and ability to explore complex themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness with sensitivity and nuance.

Let's honour her memory. She is one of the greatest singers of all time. No one could interpret songs the way she did.

Massimo Parisi

thank God, there's still someone who can....

James Pardee

Wasn't exactly an interpretation. She co-wrote it with Warner Herzog.

Dian did her justice in the movie however nothing does compare to that honey coated voice.

Silvia Figueroa

Diana Ross did amazing singing Billy's songs

Despite how bad and sad she apparently was feeling with the demons of addiction taking her, she smiled, she stood up, she listened, she was alert and with no hesitation she sang that song with class, clarity,  poise, passion, eye contact, beauty and was enchanting.

It is a shame what drugs can do. A beautiful talent wasted so young
