Don't Worry About Me
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't worry 'bout me
I'll get along
Forget about me
Just be happy my love

Let's say that our little show is over
And so the story ends
Why not call it a day the sensible way
And still be friends

Look out for yourself
That should be the rule
Give your heart and your love
To whomever you love
Darlin' don't be a fool

Why do we cling to this old faded thing
That used to be
So if you can forget
Then don't worry 'bout me

Why should we cling to some old faded thing
That used to be

So if you can forget
Then you don't worry 'bout me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billie Holiday's song "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" are a testament to a mature and reasonable approach to the end of a relationship. The lines "Don't worry 'bout me, I'll get along, forget about me, just be happy my love" convey her message of accepting the end of a romantic relationship and urging her former lover to move on with their lives. She implores her lover to prioritize their own wellbeing with the line "look out for yourself, that should be the rule," and not waste any more emotion on what used to be.

She askes "why do we cling to this old faded thing that used to be" and encourages the listener to let go and not worry about her. The tone of the song is both resigned and hopeful, with Holiday recognizing the end of the relationship but still wishing her former lover well. She advises them not to be a fool by holding onto something that has already ended. There is a sense of mutual respect and understanding in these lyrics, with each party recognized for their own agency and freedom.

Overall, the lyrics of "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" express a philosophy of acceptance and rationality in the face of heartache. Billie Holiday's voice provides a fittingly melancholic tone, and the lyrics are poignant and insightful.

I can never forget her - the depth of emotion she could invoke in another person was magic....

It breaks my heart that this was the last song she recorded, along with her dying four months later after recording it. It was like she was saying goodbye to the world.

I'm Blessed to have that album! Matter of fact, I was Blessed to be the one to unwrap the album! It wasn't in a paper envelope, but wrapped in tight fitting plastic! My Dad and I danced to this song a month before He passed away 5 yrs ago! He would have been 90 yrs old nov. 9th! I wish I could dance with Daddy again!!!

I'm glad it turned out alright for you. I am now in my 20s, and seem to be some type of predicament. I guess it's always like this huh. Hope it will turn out alright for me too.

I am locked in the old music and artists. I find it hard to listen because my sweet wife passed away a year ago. She was younger than I but she liked most of the old music and we played it all the time. AZs soon as I started this I could feel a lump in my throat.
