Easy To Love
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know too well that I'm just wasting precious time
In thinking such a thing could be
That you could ever care for me

I'm sure you hate to hear
That I adore you, dear
But grant me
Just the same

I'm not entirely to blame
For love
You'd be so easy to love
So easy to idolize
All others above

So worth the yearning for
So swell to keep every home fire burning for
We'd be so grand at the game
So carefree together
That it does seem a shame
That you can't see

Your future with me
'Cause you'd be oh, so easy to love

Overall Meaning

In "Easy to Love," Billie Holiday sings about her unrequited love for someone she knows will never reciprocate her feelings. She laments that she knows she's "just wasting precious time" by harboring the hope that the person she admires could ever love her back. She admits that it's her own fault for falling in love (she's "not entirely to blame"), but that the object of her affection would be so easy to love—easy to idolize, easy to place above all others. She believes they could be great together, carefree and happy, and it pains her that he can't see a future with her.

Holiday's delivery of the lyrics is a poignant mix of vulnerability and longing. She sings with a soft, slightly hoarse tone that underscores the sadness and resignation in the words. The song's melancholic melody and the slow, languid pace of the band contribute to its bittersweet mood. The lyrics touch on universal themes of unrequited love, self-doubt, and longing, making it a timeless and relatable piece.

I just have this feelin' that I must have had a life during the 40's it's so odd, I just take to this music like something I had forgotten about, to only rediscovered and realize how much I miss. It's like I miss those days even though, I was born in 61' I love the very feel of the 40's arts/media, the slang, the clothing, the cars...

God said that we physically die once and then, the second death, but He didn't said we come back again as an animal, plant or another human. The Hindus believe that. 🤷Ultimately, who has the evidence? Christians.
