For All We Know
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweetheart, the night is growing old
Sweetheart, my love is still untold
A kiss that is never tasted
Forever and ever is wasted

For all we know, we may never meet again
Before you go, make this moment sweet again
We won't say, goodnight until the last minute
I'll hold out my hand and my heart will be in it

For all we know this may only be a dream
We come and go like a ripple on a stream

So love me tonight, tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come, for all we know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billie Holiday's song, We in 2-3, conveys the message of cherishing the present moment and making the best out of it. The lyrics convey a sense of urgency and the need to live in the moment, as the singer expresses their love for their partner but fears that this moment may be fleeting. The opening line of the song, "Sweetheart, the night is growing old," sets the scene of a late-night conversation where the singer is expressing their emotions to their partner. The following line, "Sweetheart, my love is still untold," shows that the singer is hesitant to express their love for fear of rejection or of losing the moment.

The third and fourth lines, "A kiss that is never tasted, forever and ever is wasted," implies that by not seizing the opportunity to express their love or take a chance, they may regret it for an eternity. The next verse, "For all we know, we may never meet again, before you go, make this moment sweet again," highlights the transient nature of life and how every moment may be the last. The singer urges their lover to savor the present moment as they may never experience it again. The audience gets an idea of how the singer is trying to make the most out of this time-sensitive relationship.

The bridge, "For all we know, this may only be a dream, we come and go like a ripple on a stream," summarizes the urgency and fleeting nature of life. The singer wants to make sure that their partner is aware of the transience of life and how precious every moment is. The line, "So love me tonight, tomorrow was made for some, tomorrow may never come, for all we know," solidifies the narration theme of experiencing love in the present and passing on the opportunity to express their love may be detrimental.

Not to sound rude or disrespectful on any level.

Frank lost all of my respect, I deleted all his music for the simple fact he could have started a movement, he, all of the musicians, fans, civil rights leaders and those who claim to have given a damn about Billie.

Although today, she's 106, and just fine in the spirit world. She could have not only lived longer but this entire situation could have been avoided.

I feel this way about everything and everyone today. Like, don't start "caring" after the fact. ✋, because just save it!

Those who look like Billie, Whitney and whoever else who had an addiction are treated like monsters. While those who look like Judy Garland, Amy Winehouse and others who look like them are sent to "rehab" because they're worthy enough to be saved.

Frank knew what was happening but clearly his career was far more important than his "friend".

Lastly, Billie was before her time, unique and far more gifted than anyone else in her Class. She had so much more offer the world.

Asé.

The orchestration is part of the charming and poignant sound emanating throughout this album. The strings ,the velvety tone , a harp and choir like effects, listen and pick them out, old fashion and forgotten but undeniably of the highest quality and sophistication.

Simply gorgeous! Billie was unfortunately very close to leaving and that shows in her strained voice -but for some reason, and Ray Elli's arrangements may have helped, she conveys 101% of the song's spirit. Thanks for posting!
