Girls Were Made to Take Care of Boys
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Girls were made to take care of boys
To be kind and dutiful
Hmm
Girls were made to take care of boys
Made to share their sorrows
Made to share their joys
Made to help and guide them
With ever a patient hand

Made to give affection
In the right direction
(Always understand)

Now boys may think they take care of girls
Just because they pass on their fashions and their curls
But I've always found
It's just the other way around
(Other way around)

If you need the girl
And declare you do
(Tell her that you need her)
She'll be there
To take care of you
(She'll be there)
(Now boys may think they take care of girls)
(Just because they're clever with their fashions and their curls)
But I've always found
It's just the other way around

And if you need the girl
And declare you do

She'll be there
To take care of you

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's song Girls Were Made to Take Care of Boys is a commentary on the traditional gender roles in society. The lyrics suggest that girls are expected to be kind and dutiful, to help and guide boys with a patient hand, and to provide affection in the right direction. On the other hand, boys are portrayed as taking care of girls only by passing on their fashions and hairstyles. However, the song's lyrics argue that the reality is the other way around - girls are the ones who take care of boys in most situations.

The song's tone is ironic, as the lyrics are spoken from a female perspective, but the message highlights the unfairness of societal norms. Girls were expected to be submissive, inferior, and dependent on boys for their needs. This is reflected in the lines "Made to share their sorrows, made to share their joys," which indicate that girls' emotional labor is meant to be freely given, with no expectation of reciprocation.

The repetition of the phrase "if you need the girl, and declare you do" emphasizes that girls are expected to be always available to boys, be there whenever they need them, and take care of them. The song suggests that men may not even realize how much they rely on women's help, both practically and emotionally.

Overall, Billie Holiday's Girls Were Made to Take Care of Boys is a powerful commentary on gender inequality, which highlights the unhealthy expectations that young girls and women have been subjected to in the past.

@pfonyt

The choral accompaniment is provided by "The Stardusters", whose personnel is something of a mystery. (it's in the booklet with The Complete Original American Decca Recordings box set) Billie Holiday "Lady Day" is (IMHO) the greatest female singer of all time! Today is July 17!!! Next year will be the 50th anniversary of Billie's death. May SHE rest in peace.

@GSSoulTV

According to one article I read, the vocal group singing backgrounds was called The Stardusters. To XGrimyOneX... I certainly will trade up on some Lady Day recordings. Esp if you have "Weep no More'. I've got thousands of rare oldies tunes to trade... Peace and Love, and God Bless Billie Holiday!!!
