I Got It Bad
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The poets say that all who love are blind
But I'm in love and I know what time it is!
The Good Book says "Go seek and ye shall find
"Well, I have sought and my what a climb it is!
My life is just like the weatherIt changes with the hours
When he's near I'm fair and warmer
When he's gone I'm cloudy with showers;in emotion
Like the ocean it's either sink or swim
When a woman loves a man like I love him
Never treats me sweet and gentle the way he should
I got it bad and that ain't good!
My poor heart is sentimental not made of wood
I got it bad and that ain't good!
But when the weekend's over and Monday rolls aroun'
I end up like I start out just cryin' my heart out
He don't love me like I love him nobody could
I got it bad and that ain't good
Like a lonely weeping willow lost in the wood
I got it bad and that ain't good!
And the things I tell my pillow no woman should
I got it bad and that ain't good!
Tho folks with good intentions ell me to save my tears
I'm glad I'm mad about him I can't live without him

Lord above me make him love me the way he should
I got it bad and that ain't good

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's ballad 'I Got It Bad' is a melancholic song about unrequited love. The opening line references the age-old adage of love making people blind. However, the singer contradicts this assertion by stating how she is aware of her love but unable to shake it off. She has sought her love interest despite the hardships, and the feelings remain unrequited.

The following lines describe how her life experiences mirror her emotional state. The weather is a personal favorite of poetic symbolism for the embodiment of feelings. Her emotions change based on her love interest's presence - warm and fair when he is near and cloudy with showers when he is gone. The ocean's metaphor reflects the volatile nature of her feelings, a relationship that could either 'sink or swim.'

The later verses of the song continue in this melancholic vein, where the singer talks of her emotional vulnerability and how it does not receive the attention it deserves. She has fallen for an unworthy character who doesn't 'treat her sweet and gentle the way he should.' The final verse indicates how she is powerless, and no one can match her intense love. She pleads with the Lord to make him love her back the way he should but knows deep down that it isn't possible.

You ain't heard nothing until you hear the whole session after "I've got it bad" ends. OMG!! She let it all out about how she was being treated by the industry, individuals and stand by. It was "Lady" sadly spaced out, but honest.

Yes nina's is great but I enjoy the maudlin misery that this song is. Her slurring the words just fits the misery of how one feels when they are miserably smitten by someone who doesn't feel the same way in return. The way the piano drags itself along is also really sorrowful.

This one goes out to Lorraine...

It's such a perfect song for her. But she never worked with Ellington. Ella did, and you can't beat her rendition--or Ivie's. Still, you're right. She's so right for this. But oh how I wish she'd recorded it back in the 30's, with Teddy Wilson, and Lester, and the rest. And that couldn't happen. Song didn't exist until 1941. Still it got covered a lot over the years. Wonder why it never happened?

I guess some people prefer old Billie Holiday the way they prefer old Judy Garland. But I prefer to remember them when they were young, and still had hope. And their voices not ruined. But yes, I suppose the ruins are spendid in their way.
