If I were you
Billie Holiday Lyrics

If I were you
Here's what I'd do
I'd give my heart a break
Instead of trying to break my heart

It I were you
I'd do this too
I'd string along with me
Instead of keepin' me on a string

I'd love me the whole day long
You'd never catch me nappin'
Wouldn't have a change of heart
Not for fear
That such a thing should happen

It I were you
Here's what I'd do
I'd stick to me

My whole life through
It I were you

Overall Meaning

The song "If I Were You" by Billie Holiday is a reflective and mature piece that speaks to the lessons learned through heartbreak and the importance of self-love. In the song, Holiday tells her former lover what she believes they should have done differently in the relationship, had they been in each other's shoes. The first stanza of the song advises her former lover to give his heart a break instead of trying to break her heart. This is a poignant statement that highlights the importance of emotional maturity and the reality that the way we treat others will come back to us in some form. The second stanza of the song highlights the importance of being honest and transparent in a relationship. Instead of keeping someone on a string, one should be honest about their intentions and what they want from the relationship.

The chorus of the song speaks to the importance of self-love and the need to be true to oneself. The line "I'd love me the whole day long" is a powerful reminder that we are responsible for our own happiness and that self-love is the foundation of any healthy relationship. The final stanza advises the former lover to stick to themselves and be true to who they are, throughout their life.

One of my favorites. I liked Holiday in this format rather the strings bit. This format is more intimate, more after hour, time to kick back after a long day, music.

Wonderful song. Her early saucy period is my favorite.

Hard to believe this song has gotten such few hits on you tube.  The lyrics have such a feminine charm.  There is so much love in this song -- despite the fact you have hurt me stay with me and love me the rest of your life.  Pretty amazing.
