Ill Wind
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blow, ill wind, blow away
Let me rest today
You're blowin' me no good
No good

Go, ill wind, go away
Skies are oh so gray
Around my neighborhood
And that's no good

[Chorus 1:]
You're only misleading
The sunshine I'm needing
Ain't that a shame
It's so hard to keep up
With troubles that creep up
From out of nowhere
When love's to blame

So, ill wind, blow away
Let me rest today
You're blowin' me no good
No good

[Chorus 1]

I'll wind

Overall Meaning

, I heard that you're a whirlwind
Swiftly through the sky you whirl and twirl and swirl and then
You spiral down with grace
You touch the ground and then you race away

Blow, ill wind, away
Let me rest today
You're blowin' me no good
No good

[Chorus 2:]
Ill wind, don't blow me no good
Cause you're blowin' me, you're blowin' me no good
Ill wind, don't blow me no good
Cause you're blowin' me no good

[Chorus 2]

The lyrics of Ill Wind by Billie Holiday is about the singer's plea for the ill wind to blow away because it's impacting her life. She's asking for a break from the troubles and problems that are being brought into her life by the ill wind. The song starts with a plea to the wind to go away, so she can rest for a while. The singer reveals that the wind is not doing any good to her, and the gray skies in her neighborhood are not helping. She sings that the wind is only misleading the sunshine she needs, and it's tough to keep up with the troubles that arise without warning. The singer believes that love is to blame for the troubles caused by the ill wind.

The chorus of the song emphasizes that the ill wind is not doing any good and is only causing trouble. The song's second chorus carries the lines "You're blowin' me, you're blowin' me no good," emphasizing that the ill wind is responsible for bringing trouble to the singer's life.

Masterful, soulful. I do hear the ill winds that followed you around like a shadow, Billie. Loved the backing band. Ben Webster's 2 solo's, gorgeous. Billie and Ben, you two were peas in a pod. xox Such a nice touch with the gardenia morphing into Billie at the beginning. Billie’s flowered tresses came about by accident, according to biographer Bud Kliment (via the Human Flower Project). The story goes that “During Holiday’s tenure at Kelly’s Stable, Sylvia Sims, a fellow jazz singer, furnished Holiday with an accessory that was to become a lasting part of her image. One night before a performance, Holiday burned her hair with a curling iron. Sims, who was in the room with her, promptly went to a club down the street, where the coat check girls were selling flowers. Sims bought a big white gardenia and gave it to Holiday, who wore it that night to cover the burned section of her hair. She liked wearing the flower so much that she began to put a gardenia in her hair before every performance.”....the secret to gardenias, not browning, is never to touch the petals, touching the stems and leaves are fine. Here is a closeup of Billie wearing an abundance of gardenias https://au.pinterest.com/pin/384776361906537553/ Thank you for posting roundmidnighttv

Wonderful to hear this recording again.Didn't know it was performed by Adelaide Hall..Have a story how I met Adelaide Hall at her friend and pianists apartment, in London in 1991, She was occasionally performing, with Alan Clare and was about to rehearse. She had been semi-retired and had been living in London for a while when we met her. My friend Belinda Moody a double bassist, and I were there to perform at Ronnie Scotts Jazz club with some local musicians and some fellow Australian Jazz musicians. Adelaide asked me to sing her something, I sang a verse and Chorus of 'God Bless the Child" and Adelaide sang Shes funny That Way...It was unforgettable and then Adelaide spoke a little about Billie Holiday...Adelaide said that she enjoyed performing at the Cotton Club singing and dancing and that she herself was very close to Duke Ellington, and knew Strayhorn very well too.
