Isn't This a Lovely Day
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The weather is frightening
The thunder and lightning
Seem to be having their way
But as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
The turn in the weather
Will keep us together
So I can honestly say
That as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
And everything's okay

Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain
You were going on your way now you've got to remain

Just as you were going leaving me all at sea
The clouds broke they broke and oh what a break for me

I can see the sun up high, though we're caught in a storm
I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm

Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter

If the skies are gray
Long as I can be with you, it's a lovely day

Overall Meaning

The song Isn't This a Lovely Day was written by Irving Berlin in 1935 and was first performed by Fred Astaire in the film Top Hat. The song has since been covered by numerous artists, including Billie Holiday who adds her own unique flair to the tune. Billie's version of the song is slower and more romantic than Astaire's, and emphasizes the notion of finding joy in the midst of a storm.

In the first verse, Billie notes that the weather is frightful with thunder and lightning, but she doesn't seem to mind. She suggests that the turn in the weather will actually bring her and her love interest closer together, thereby making the day lovely. The line "And everything's okay" implies that the relationship is strong enough to weather any storm.

The second verse touches on the theme of unexpected moments and how they can lead to unexpected outcomes. When Billie's love interest was leaving, the clouds suddenly cleared, resulting in him having to stay with her in the rain. Rather than focusing on the negative aspects of being caught in the rain, Billie sees it as an opportunity for intimacy; she sees the potential for the two of them to "be cozy and warm". Even though it's raining, she doesn't mind because she's with someone she cares about.

Overall, Isn't This a Lovely Day is about finding joy in unexpected moments and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. Billie's interpretation of the song conveys a sense of ease and contentment that is both soothing and uplifting.

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL

Billie is good with slow numbers, but her greatness is in the way she effortlessly, almost nonchalantly, swings with up tempo tunes..

@DarkestLaugh

This is the first Billie Holiday tune I've heard that has happy lyrics! It's in a much different style from the Fred and Ginger version, and I think it's more elegant. On the other hand, she didn't tap dance on roller skates while she sang it. I call it a tie.
