Isn't This a Lovely Day?
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The weather is frightening.
The thunder and lightning
Seem to be having their way.
But as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day.
The turn in the weather
Will keep us together
So I can honestly say,
That as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
And everything's okay.

Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain.
You were going on your way, now you've got to remain.

Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea,
The clouds broke, they broke and oh what a break for me.

I can see the sun up high, though we're caught in a storm.
I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm.

Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter

If the skies are gray.
Long as I can be with you, it's a lovely day.

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song "Isn't This a Lovely Day," she sings about finding beauty in a day that might seem uninviting to others. The lyrics describe a day that might be considered frightening due to the thunder and lightning in the sky, but the singer chooses to focus on the potential closeness that could arise from being caught in the rain. The song celebrates the idea of being together through any challenge, regardless of the weather or other external factors. The lyrics suggest that the weather might actually be a blessing in disguise, turning what could have been a fleeting interaction into a longer-lasting connection.

The contrast between the perceived negative aspects of the day and the singer's optimism creates an interesting tension in the song. The lyrics imply that the singer has a positive attitude towards life and a willingness to embrace unexpected events. The romantic nature of the song adds another layer to its interpretation, suggesting that regardless of external circumstances, the most important thing is being together with the person you love.

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL

Billie is good with slow numbers, but her greatness is in the way she effortlessly, almost nonchalantly, swings with up tempo tunes..

@DarkestLaugh

This is the first Billie Holiday tune I've heard that has happy lyrics! It's in a much different style from the Fred and Ginger version, and I think it's more elegant. On the other hand, she didn't tap dance on roller skates while she sang it. I call it a tie.
