Lady Sings the Blues
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lady sing the blues
She's got them bad
She feels so sad

And wants the world to know
Just what her blues are all about

Lady sings the blues
She tells her side
Nothing to hide

Now the world will know
Just what her blues is all about

The blues ain't nothin' like a pain in your heart
When you get a bad start
When you and your man have to part

I ain't gonna just sit around and cry
I know I won't die
'Cause I love him

Lady sings the blues
I'm tellin' you, she's got 'em bad
But now the world will know
She's never gonna sing them no more

The blues ain't nothin' but a pain in your heart
When you get a bad start
When you and your man have to part

Ain't gonna just sit around and cry
I know I won't die
'Cause I love him

Lady sings the blues
I'm tellin' you, she's got them bad

But now the world will know
She's never gonna sing them no more, no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Holiday's song "Lady Sings The Blues" highlight the raw emotion and pain that come with experiencing the blues. The first stanza shows a woman who is deeply affected by the blues and feels the need to express it to the world. The second stanza highlights the honesty and transparency that comes with the blues. She shares her side of the story without holding back or hiding anything. The third stanza talks about how the blues is nothing but a pain in your heart. It is the feeling you get when you have a bad start or when you have to part with a loved one. Despite the pain, the woman won't just sit around and cry because she loves him. My mom used to sing this to me 40 years ago. I love you both. Both gone but not forgotten.

Billie Holiday was absolutely unique.  Nobody can sing as she did; imitators can't capture her phrasing and singular voice.  Even today, she has many fans, besides myself, I have neighbors in my apt. complex who collect her music and listen to her all the time. Billie lives on through her singing!
