Moanin' Low
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Moanin' low, my sweet man, I love him so
Though he's mean as can be
He's the kind of man needs the kind
Of a woman like me

Gonna die if my sweet man should pass me by
If I die where'll he be
He's the kind of a man needs the kind
Of a woman like me

Don't know any reason why
He treats me so poorly
What have I gone and done
Makes me troubles double with his worries
When surely I ain't deserving of none

Moanin' low
My sweet man is gonna go
When he goes, oh Lordy
He's the kind of a man needs the kind
Of a woman like me
Moanin' low, my sweet man, I love him so
Though he's mean as can be
He's the kind of man needs the kind
Of a woman like me

Gonna die if my sweet man should pass me by
If I die where'll he be
He's the kind of a man needs the kind
Of a woman like me

Don't know any reason why
He treats me so poorly
What have I gone and done
Makes me troubles double with his worries
When surely I ain't deserving of none

Moanin' low
My sweet man is gonna go
When he goes, oh Lordy

He's the kind of a man needs the kind
Of a woman like me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Holiday Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra's "Moanin' Low" describe the singer's love for her man, even though he is typically mean to her. Despite his negative qualities, the singer believes that he needs someone like her, and she needs him just as much. The song expresses the devastating fear that the singer feels at the thought of losing her man, as she would not be able to cope without him.

The lyrics also suggest confusion and frustration on the part of the singer, as she cannot understand why her man treats her poorly. She laments that she does not deserve the troubles that come with his worries, and wonders what she could have done to deserve such treatment. Nonetheless, she remains devoted to him, willing to put up with his behavior in order to be with him.

Overall, the song is a love ballad that demonstrates the complexities of relationships and the depth of feelings that can arise despite difficult circumstances. The lyrics show how people are willing to endure hardship and mistreatment in order to be with the ones they love.

Nothing will ever replace the sound of the great Lady Day......She takes this song and gives it a gut retching feel and makes you take every bit of the "MOANIN'" low ........Love that Lady D!!!!

Great song sung by a great singer. The long orchestra intros were common in those days for the dance floor crowd but when Billie Holiday vocals kicked in you wanted more.
