My First Impression of You
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My first impression of you
Was like the sight of flowers in spring
You were a glorious thing to see

My first impression of you
Was something indescribably new
I stood there looking at you
Smiling at me

If you had stepped right out of heaven
It wouldn't surprise me more
I thought you were an angel
From heaven's door

It may sound silly, but true
My heart just stopped
When I caught your eye

So overwhelming
Was my first impression of you

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's "My First Impression of You," the singer describes their initial experience meeting someone new. The song opens with the singer expressing an overwhelming sense of awe and admiration for this new person. They describe their initial impression as being as beautiful and refreshing as the first sight of flowers in the spring. The person in question is something that is indescribably new to the singer, and the very sight of them makes them stop in their tracks. The person is described as a "glorious thing to see" and the singer is left smiling from ear to ear at the mere sight of them.

The second part of the song emphasizes the power this new person holds over the singer. They describe feeling as though this person could have stepped right out of heaven. The singer is so consumed with how taken they are with the new person, they question if they could be an angel from heaven's door. Further in the song, the singer confesses that their heart stopped when they caught the new person's eye. The new person's effect on them is entirely overwhelming. Ultimately, the lyrics communicate the powerful impact of love at first sight and the deep feelings of admiration and respect that can come with it.

It was 1349 Old Mexico California and out of nowhere a writer had dropped off one of the World's Greatest of love songs written in British. He stood there and smiled then left. The song "My first impression of You", the world's surprise the song would not become famous until 1809, when a young man and his girlfriend decided that a overlooked music composition was exactly what described their love for each other. The song was immediately sent to the HRH Prince of Spain in 1812.
