My Man
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's cost me a lot
But there's one thing that I've got
It's my man, it's my man
Cold and wet, tired, you bet
All of this I'll soon forget with my man

He's not much for looks
He's no hero out of books
But I love him, yes I love him
Two or three girls has he
That he likes as well as me
But I love him

I don't know why I should
He isn't true
He beats me too
What can I do

Oh, my man, I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, all right

What's the difference if I say
I'll go away, when I know
I'll come back on my knees some day?

For whatever my man is
I am his forever more

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's song My Man is a tune about a woman who is addicted to a man who does not treat her well. The song is emotional and realistic, owing to the fact that it does not romanticize about the troubles that the woman faces in her relationship. The first two lines of the song state, "It's cost me a lot, but there's one thing that I've got." Clearly, the cost alludes to the mental and emotional pain she experiences in her relationship, and the one thing she has is her man. Despite the issues that she faces, she says, "But I love him, yes I love him." This is an example of how sometimes, one's feelings for a person are beyond control, even if it causes them severe harm.

The second verse of the song is all about the woman's man. The woman states that he is not much in terms of external beauty nor is he a hero from a book. However, "Two or three girls has he/That he likes as well as me/But I love him" highlights the fact that she is willing to accept his unfaithfulness to her, and she only cares about the love she has for him. The song's final line, "For whatever my man is, I am his forever more," emphasizes the message that she is eternally bound to this man and implies that it is unlikely that she will ever be able to leave him.

The best description of her voice is haunting. It makes you want to cry like she is pleading for a love that doesn't hurt. Her troubles came through her tone.

Yes.

People may say she didn’t have a great voice, or it wasn’t as strong as Sarah Vaughn, or as sophisticated as Ella Fitzgerald. But Billie was Raw, and full of Emotions. She has so much pain and
Sadness you can hear it her voice. She had the power to touch you with the emotions. That’s way she’s so great, and that’s why she’s my Favourite. She was the first jazz singer I fell in love with. And every time I hear a song, with that voice, I’m that’s Lady Day. My favourite Album is Lady in Satin. She was getting sick, and lost a lot of her voice. But if you hear the album. She still could move you.

You said it, Sweettasteofhoney -- and what a perfect assessment. Lady was one of a kind.

Yes, Ella is way way better than Billie if we're talking about vocal technique, but I like Billie's sound more.

jackie bessard

She wasn’t ‘polished’ ... She was raw but REAL (there is a difference) well done 🎙Lady Day. (Today’s ‘noise’ is just that ... and cheap imitations of🤷🏽‍♀️ ‘sumthin’ 🧠 weird but Not MUSIC. Having heard Three different versions of this song today, I’d have to rate Billie #1 and BOSS Diana Ross a very close #2. I guess that leaves Barbara Streisand.... last 🤷🏽‍♀️

And she used it “like an instrument” as I heard her say in an interview - like one of those horns soloing
