One Never Knows Does One?
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One never knows, does one?
When love will come along
Then so suddenly life turns out to be a song

One never knows, does one?
The moment or the place
Then right before your eyes
Someone occupies your embrace

Someday look and you'll find
Two hearts were blest
Someday fate may be kind
Pray for the future
Hope for the best
One never knows, does one?

That's just the way it goes
All at once you hear
"Hold me. Caress me"

And then love may come
But when, one never knows

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's song One Never Knows Does One is a beautiful melody that explores the idea of love and the unexpected ways it can come into our lives. The first line "One never knows, does one?" sets the tone for the rest of the song - love is unpredictable and often comes when we least expect it. The next line "When love will come along" suggests that love is not something we can predict or control, but rather something that happens to us.

The second verse highlights the suddenness of love, "Then so suddenly life turns out to be a song". The metaphor of life as a song implies that love brings joy and happiness, much like a beautiful melody can elevate a mood. The lyrics paint a picture of love as a magical force that can transform our lives in an instant.

The final verse encourages listeners to remain hopeful, "Someday fate may be kind, pray for the future, hope for the best, one never knows, does one?" This line suggests that even though love is unpredictable, it's important to remain hopeful and positive, knowing that love can come into our lives when we least expect it.

Overall, the lyrics of One Never Knows Does One remind us that love is unpredictable and often comes when we least expect it, but that we should remain open to the possibilities of love and always remain hopeful.

@RandomBarrel

The beginning of the song sounds eerily similar to Ms. Holiday's, "Where is the Sun". Look it up, it's pretty interesting.

Never knew this was from a film with Alice Faye singing it. Both versions are so dissimilar but both versions are nice . Billies is more earthy while Alice Faye’s is sweetness and nice . But both great interpretations
